Several Cape Girardeau County Board of Realtors members are helping young people make choices about buying and renting property.

Together with local high schools, they will be involved in "It's Your Move," a consumer education program for high school juniors and seniors.

"It's Your Move" is a three-to-six-week course that will be taught at Notre Dame, Scott City, Kelley R-5 and Zalma high schools this semester.

Students at the schools will learn about renting and leasing property, buying real estate and the rights and responsibilities of lease contracts and real estate loans.

ERA Cape Realty and Boatmen's National Bank are sponsoring the program.

David Glastetter of Cape Realty said: "Buying a house will probably be the biggest purchase these students make in a lifetime. It's important that they learn how to make wise choices, whether they buy or rent."

The "It's Your Move" program was developed by the Center for Education and Private Enterprise, a not-for-profit foundation of the Missouri Association of Realtors in Columbia.

Realtors and other businesses sponsor the program in their area schools by making financial contributions to cover the cost of the student books used in the course. They also volunteer their time by making classroom presentations and assisting with field trips.

Any business interested in sponsorship of the program may contact Linda Pruitt, executive secretary for the Cape Girardeau County Board of Realtors, at 335-7969.
