Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton has identified the body found near the city's floodwall Wednesday morning as Lester Laman Jeffrey Jr.

Jeffrey, 59, of Cape Girardeau was reported missing to the Cape Girardeau Police Department on Monday, July 21, 2008.

The body was found in a field north of downtown near the intersection of Broadway and North Main Street by a mowing crew.

"We don't know that foul play was involved," said Sgt. Barry Hovis, spokesman for the Cape Girardeau Police Department. .

At 10:45 a.m., the Cape Girardeau Police Department, the Cape Girardeau County Coroner and an FBI agent were on the scene investigating.

The body is in the Cape Girardeau County Morgue and pending transfer to the Mineral Area Hospital in Farmington, Mo., for an autopsy. The cause of death has not been determined.

No other details are yet known, but the scene has been blocked off.
