A former resident of Cape Girardeau and 28-year veteran of the Missouri Highway Patrol has been named chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol, headquartered at Carson City.
Capt. G. Paul Corbin, who will be a colonel in his new position, will be over a department of 349 officers. He takes the position Sept. 1.
"I have always enjoyed challenges," said Corbin. "This will not only offer me new challenges, but also gives me the opportunity to continue my career, using the skills and attributes I have developed over the years."
Corbin was one of 82 people who applied for the position.
Corbin was born at Carthage in 1942. He moved to Cape Girardeau, where he was a 1960 graduate of Central High School.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964. He attended Southeast Missouri State University one year, and has an associate, bachelor and master's degrees in criminal justice and sociology.
He is a member of the Missouri Army National Guard, and will retire from the Guard as a Lt. Col. He is a 1990 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
In 1988, Corbin was appointed by Gov. John Ashcroft as a peace officer standards and training commissioner, serving in that position until the end of Ashcroft's term in 1991. He is also a graduate of the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute and Northwestern University's Traffic Institute's Police Administration Course.
Corbin is active in national and local organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs and Police and Missouri Police Chiefs Association.
Corbin was appointed to the highway patrol Jan. 1, 1966, and was assigned to Troop C in St. Louis
He was promoted to corporal April 1, 1972, and transferred to the patrol's training division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 1985, and to lieutenant in 1982, when he was assigned to Troop G at Willow Springs. He was named director of the Missouri Highway Patrol's Training Academy at the patrol's general headquarters in Jefferson City in September 1986.
Corbin was appointed director of the patrols' traffic division in 1991. Since 1992 he has served as an assistant commander in the Field Operations Bureau, which is responsible for coordinating all troop activity.
Corbin is married to the former Nancy Welch, a former deputy sheriff with the Clay County, Mo. Sheriff's Department.
Corbin's father, a Missouri Highway Patrol officer, was killed in the line of duty Sept. 15, 1943, in a traffic accident.
