Kiefner Brothers Inc. has been named as the general contractor for the new Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce headquarters building to be constructed at 1267 N. Mount Auburn Road.

Jim Rust, chairman of the chamber board of directors, announced the selection following a board meeting Tuesday.

Bidding was limited to members of the chamber.

The 4,800-square-foot building is expected to be completed by summer of 1996.

The chamber has until November 1996 to move from its current headquarters at 601 N. Kingshighway. That building was sold more than a year ago with the agreement that the chamber could remain there up to two years.

The new building will be brick. It will include a large meeting room that will seat up to 50 people. The parking lot will have 41 spaces, including handicapped spaces.

Tom Holshouser is the architect.

Kyle Davis was chairman of the building committee, which made its final recommendation to the board Tuesday. Members of the building committee include Harry Rust, Robin Tolbert, Terry McDowell, Kim McDowell, Jeff Krantz, Dr. Neyland Clark and Jim Rust.

The building will be only the fourth for the chamber since it was founded in 1920. During its first eight years the chamber met in a building that housed the Elks Club before settling in at 225 Broadway in 1928. It moved from there to North Kingshighway in 1974.
