SIKESTON -- The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission has awarded a contract for the first phase of work on the extension of Nash Road eastward into the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority.

This phase includes the grading of embankments from Ramsey Creek east to the port authority's railroad. Three other phases will be bid as part of the project.

District 10 Highway Engineer Freeman McCullah said the contract was awarded Friday to Bloomsdale Excavating Co. at a cost of $1.9 million. They had the lowest bid submitted for the project.

Work should begin around the first of October. Bob Wilson will be the resident engineer in charge of the project.
