Construction work will force two road closures in the Cape Girardeau area, Missouri Department of Transportation officials said Monday.

The right turn lane at the intersection of northbound Mount Auburn Road and William Street near O'Charley's Restaurant was scheduled to be closed to traffic, starting Monday night. The closure is expected to last about a week so the contractor, Gaines Construction Co. of Wentzville, Mo., can begin replacing pavement as part of a $1 million project involving improvements on William Street near Interstate 55.

The other project involves Old Route 61 in Cape Girardeau County. It will be closed for resurfacing beginning today, weather permitting.

"We knew with all the heavy equipment on the Diversion Channel bridge replacement project that the road would need to be repaved once the project was completed," said MoDOT engineer Bob Wilson. "It was part of the contract that Penzel Construction would resurface the roadway once they finished work."

The road will be closed from south of the AmerenUE substation to the Diversion Channel boat ramp. The work will take place through Wednesday, Wilson said.
