The computer server at the Cape Girardeau post office went down Wednesday, causing some problems for customers.

Though employees were able to get one computer up and running to weigh items during the day, the server was not repaired as of Wednesday afternoon.

As a result, postal workers could not accept credit cards or money orders and could not coordinate all the data stored on individual computers.

Money orders can still be sent from the Bi-State satellite office on North Kingshighway.

Dan Strauss, customer service manager at the post office, said experts from St. Louis were coming down and that he hoped to have everything working by opening time today. Software and possibly hardware will have to be replaced, he said.

Strauss said he's optimistic no data will be lost and stressed that the problems will have no impact on mail delivery.
