Community events planned to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have been announced. Activities in the following list include both university and community events in Cape Girardeau throughout January.
19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., program starts at 8 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Show Me Center.
Guest speaker is attorney Brandon Shelton of Indianapolis, Ind.
Tickets are available at the Southeast Bookstore and Schnucks Food and Drug Store through Jan. 16. For group tickets contact Dobbie Herrion at 651-2583.
14th Annual Community Celebration. "The Seven Words of Martin" service will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Second Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. Guest speakers include area ministers and performances by area choirs, as well as the presentation of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award. The event is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance, NAACP and the Downtown Council of Churches. A reception will immediately follow the service. For information, contact the Rev. Artistic Expressions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream. The artistic exhibit is open at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at Southeast Missouri State University Center Ballroom. Participants may express themselves in any artistic form as a reflection of Dr. King's legacy. Expressions vary from dance to spoken word. Youth and adults are encouraged to participate. Prizes will be awarded.

"Boxes and Walls" display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 21 at the University Center Party Room. Sponsored by the Office of Residence Life, the display is designed to provoke discussion on various injustices in society.
"Passing the Torch of Unity." Program begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at the University Center Ballroom. Sponsored by various student organizations and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee,this program includes a keynote speaker and musical tributes.
