The Neighborhood Connections group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 101 N. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau for a discussion of how the city comprehensive plan will help the neighborhood. Cosmetologists will hold a cut-a-thon, perform blindfolded cuts and create glamour styles in just three minutes. The event will include two relaxation sessions, raffles, silent auctions, photos with the "Pink Panther" (a truck owned by Jane Tipton), a bazaar, games and "Saxy Jazz" live music. Friends of Riverside Regional Library in Jackson are accepting donations of books, audio books, videos, DVDs and CDs in good condition for use in their upcoming fall book sale. Friends of the Library can preview the sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18. The sale is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20. The Buck-A-Bag sale will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. All money raised will be used for special projects at the Jackson branch of the library. Coach Gene Bess, a 1953 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, will speak at the banquet. He is currently in his 38th season as athletic director and men's basketball coach at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Bess is the all-time winning junior college coach with a record of 1027-270. He will autograph copies of the book "Gene Bess: College Basketball's Winningest Coach."
