Genealogy unit meeting June 25 at Jackson

The Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. June 25 at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson, Mo.

The meeting will be an open forum concentrating on research.

Board members will be on hand to assist novices.

The Genealogy Research Room at Riverside Regional Library is open to the public during regular library hours.

Cape woman to compete in nursing home pageant

Velma Fear, first runner-up in the Missouri Health Care Association's District V Ms. Nursing Home Pageant, will compete in the Missouri State Pageant in August.

Fear, a resident at Heartland Care and Rehab Center of Cape Girardeau, was selected as first runner-up in the district contest, held at Sikeston.

"She is very active at the Heartland Center, said Genny Ferguson, activities director at the center.

"She takes pride in being well-groomed at all times," Ferguson said.

Fear, who can been seen pushing wheelchairs and helping other patients, said she lives her philosophy of life at the center: "Be you to others, kind and true, as you would have others be to you."

Marine Corps League group plans meeting

The Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment of the Marine Corps League will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at 1049 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau. Active and former Marines are invited to attend.

Millersville schedules school reunion Aug. 3

The Millersville school reunion will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Little Old Opry on Highway 34 at Burfordsville.

Reservations must be made by July 10 for a catered meal.

Night hike planned at Trail of Tears Park

A night hike will be held at Trail of Tears State Park on June 28. Reservations are required for the event, which starts at 8 p.m.

Trail of Tears State Park is on the banks of the Mississippi River on Highway 177, about 10 miles north of Cape Girardeau.

Adult reading program at Cape Public Library

The adult reading program is under way at the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

Signups for "Survive the Summer With a Good Book" are being accepted at the library reference desk.

Readers receive the reading club rules, a suggested list of books and a reading log to record book titles read.

The adult reading program continues through Aug. 31.

Poetry Coffee House will meet on July 22

The Poetry Coffee House will meet at 7 p.m. July 22 at the Hirsch Community Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

Participants are invited to read their own poetry or to enjoy the poetry of others.

Original poetry is encouraged. The event is free and open to the public.

Bridge work to close Highway 51 to traffic

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A portion of Highway 51 near the bollinger-Stoddard County line will be closed, beginning today while a contractor begins work on replacing the bridge over Drainage Ditch 104. A detour will be marked along state routes during the road closing.

The project includes replacing two bridges amile and a mile south of the county line. Work is to be completed in the fall.
