City weed and high grass policies announced

When a complaint on weeds or high grass is received or observed, the Cape Girardeau nuisance abatement officer will post the property with a seven-day-or-less notice. A standard sign or stake driven into the property may be used. After several violations the notice will be taped to the front door or mailed to the property owner. If the property is not brought within compliance, public works will mow the area and the owner will be billed for the service. A copy of the bill will be forwarded to the court for record when the offender appears in court to pay fines. Fines must be paid in full prior to court appearance before the person can pay the summons fine and court cost. A summons will be issued without notice for those who continue to fail to mow their property and have been warned in the past. Concerned residents may call the nuisance abatement officer at 332-4907.
