Fund raisers new part of 100-mile yard sale

From 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, fund raisers will be set up at South Elementary School in Jackson as part of the 100-mile yard sale. The sale begins at East Jackson Boulevard and continues along Highway 25 south to Kennett, Mo. The fund raisers will benefit the Women's Safe House, the Network Against Sexual Violence, the Cape Girardeau Police Department, the Jackson Historical Society, the 4-H Club and the Humane Society. Baked goods will be for sale.

Teen Challenge holds strawberry fest, auction

Teen Challenge International of Mid-America will hold its 15th annual strawberry festival and auction from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Teen Challenge Center, located five miles north of Cape Girardeau on County Road 621. The auction is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tours, puppet shows, concerts and strawberry drawings will also be held in an effort to offer the public an opportunity to view the Teen Challenge program firsthand. Zalma to hold mud-racing classes on Monday

Classes will be available for mud racing in Zalma on Monday. Check-in time is 11 a.m. at the Rustic Lodge, with racing beginning at 1:30 p.m. Five classes will be available: stock, superstock, outlaw, pro-stock and open. Kiddie races in battery-operated rigs will also be available. For more information, call the lodge at (573) 722-5342.

June programs planned at Riverside library

Riverside Regional Library's 2005 summer reading program, "Dragons, Dreams & Daring Deeds," begins Wednesday. The program is divided into two age groups: 10 years old and younger and 11 to 18 years old. Get a prize for every five books read (up to 25) in June and July. For kids of all ages, the library offers several programs: On June 7, "Adventure Tales," musical adventure tales by Anthony Clark, will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Jackson, 11:30 a.m. in Perryville, Mo., and 1:30 p.m. in Altenburg. The program will continue June 8 at 1 p.m. in Scott City, 2:30 p.m. in Oran, Mo., and 4 p.m. in Benton, Mo. Ms. Lynn and the library troubadors will tell "Dragon Tales" June 14 at 9:30 a.m. in Jackson, 11:30 a.m. in Perryville and 1:30 p.m. in Altenburg. The program will continue June 15 at 1 p.m. in Scott City, 2:30 p.m. in Oran and 4 p.m. in Benton. Patsy Johnson will tell "A Knight's Tale" June 21 at 9:30 a.m. in Jackson, 11:30 a.m. in Perryville and 1:30 p.m. in Altenburg. The program will continue June 22 at 1 p.m. in Scott City, 2:30 p.m. in Oran and 4 p.m. in Benton. Magician Teresa T will conduct "Magical Tales" June 28 at 9:30 a.m. in Jackson, 11:30 a.m. in Perryville and 1:30 p.m. in Altenburg. The program will continue June 29 at 1 p.m. in Scott City, 2:30 p.m. in Oran and 4 p.m. in Benton.

Retired teachers hold summer luncheon

The Cape Girardeau unit of retired teachers will hold a 9:30 a.m. meeting Wednesday at Chateau Girardeau, followed by a summer luncheon. Entertainment will include Roger Bierschwal. An officer installation will also be included. Retired teachers should attend. It is the last meeting until the fall. For more information, call Gene Loftis at 334-5390 or Doris Ford at 335-6878.

Jackson band begins seasonal concerts

The 2005 Jackson band concert season will open at 8 p.m. June 2 at the Jacskon Band Shell in City Park. One of the area's premiere country fiddlers, Steve Schaffner, who will perform everything from country to classical, will be the special guest. The band's portion of the concert will include "A Discovery Fantasy," "A Collection of George Gershwin's Hits," "Slim Trombone," marches and a number from the movie Titanic. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The entrance is on Route D, behind Jackson's new skate park.

May Greene Park holds neighborhood gathering

At 6 p.m. June 2, rain or shine, May Greene park will hold a gathering encouraging neighborhood connections. All who live or work between Spanish on the East and Sprigg on the West; North Street on the North and Independence on the South are encouraged to attend. The park's location is at the corner of Fountain and Themis streets in Cape Girardeau. Come to meet neighbors, share interests and concerns, enjoy good food, bring the kids to meet the clown, connect to useful resources, get organized, neighborhood watch, and meet neighborhood services and ministries. Sedgewickville School picnic at city park June 4

The Sedgewickville School picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 4 at Sedgewickville City Park in downtown Sedgewickville. Bring covered dish and tableware and photos/mementos to share.

Book sale at Jackson library June 10-11

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 10 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 11, the Riverside Regional Library, 204 S. Union, Jackson, will have a garage book sale. Items include books, audio books, videos, music audios, paperbacks, and magazines.
