Marine Corps League meeting set tonight

A Marine Corps League meeting will be held at 7 p.m. today at the VFW Hall in Cape Girardeau.

Active, reserve and former Marines are invited to attend.

Benefit dance Friday for ill Jackson boy

A benefit dance will be held for Anthony Scholl from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday at the Jaycee Hall off Highway 72 near Jackson.

Scholl, a patient at Children's Hospital in St. Louis, is recovering from encephalitis.

He is the 12-year-old son of Randy and Mary Scholl of Jackson.

A fund has been established at Bank of America, 2 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau.

The benefit dance features music by The Rees Boys.

Cost of admission is $8 a person, or $15 a couple. Advance tickets are available at Elite Travel, 354 S. Silver Springs Road in Cape Girardeau or Jones Drug Store, 125 Court at Jackson.

Spring charity horse show at Flickerwood

The Mid-American Spring Charity Horse Show to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., will be held today, Friday and Saturday at Flickerwood Arena near Jackson.

Walking horse classes will be held over the three-day period, said Rodger Weaver, show chairman.

Phil Snodgrass, of Mount Carmel, Tenn., will judge the walking horse classes.

Show time will be 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday, with a special 1 p.m. matinee show Saturday.

Strawberry festival on Saturday at Villa Ridge

The Villa Ridge, Ill., Strawberry Day Festival will be held Saturday, starting with a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast.

Food and entertainment, including a "fun walk" and auction of donated goods, will be held.

100 vintage cars slated to take part in parade

More than 100 vintage cars will participate in an antique car parade from the Drury Lodge to Water Street in downtown Cape Girardeau on Sunday. Participating in the 2 p.m. parade will be 84 members of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, which will be in Cape Girardeau on a segment of its 2002 Great River Delta Tour.

Also participating in the event will be the MG Club of St. Louis and the Capaha Car Club of Cape Girardeau.

The parade route will start at the Drury Lodge, go to Mount Auburn Road, then left on William, then left on Kingshighway, then right on Broadway to Main and Water streets, for a block party.

Civil War Round Table scheduled Sunday

Diane Moran, a storyteller, historical re-enactor and naturalist, will be guest speaker at the Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Civil War Round Table meeting Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Room of the Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Moran's topic will be "Sacagawea, Bird Woman: Images of the Last Frontier."

Genealogy group plans to meet on Tuesday

The Scott County Genealogy & Historical Society will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the courthouse in Benton.

An update on the publication of the Scott County Family History Book, and a discussion of upcoming events, will head the agenda.

Dutchtown to hold flood levee fund raiser

Dutchtown will hold a three-day fund raiser for its permanent flood levee plan over the Memorial Day Weekend.

The town will set up a lunch stand for three days at highways 25 and 74, said Bud Obermann, village chairman. This will coincide with the 100-mile yard sale, from Jackson to Kennett.

Pork burgers, hot dogs and sodas will be available May 24, 25 and 26 from 9:30 a.m.

Stars and Stripes Museum fish fry May 25

The Stars and Stripes Museum and Library at Bloomfield will sponsor a fund-raising fish fry from 5 to 8 p.m. May 25 on the grounds of the museum.

The Jaycees Bayou Cookers of East Prairie will provide the food. Cost is $8.50 for adults and $7.50 for children under 12.

Book discussion group to meet May 29

"The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother" will be discussed at 7 p.m. May 29 during the book discussion group of the Cape Girardeau Public Library meeting in the Hirsch Community Room of the library.

This memoir, by James McBride, describes how the author dealt with such issues as race, religion and the search of self-identify.

Lorena Shell Eaker will be guest speaker at the Cape Girardeau County Genealogy Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 22 at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Eaker has written books on the Eaker family and German-speaking people west of the Catawba River in North Carolina. She has a forthcoming book on the Frederick Wise family.

Netherlands visitors to attend reunion

The Eeftink/Eftink family reunion will be held June 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Leopold.

Fran and Willemien Beusink teMolder and a son, Romuald, will attend the reunion from the Netherlands. Willemien's mother's maiden name was Eeftink.

Rainbow Alliance receives grant and award

Southeast Missouri State University's Rainbow Alliance student organization has received a Student Programming in Excellence Award and a $500 programming grant from the Standing Committee for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness of the American College Personnel Association of Higher Education.

The Rainbow Alliance, established last fall, was nominated for the National Coming Out Day program held in October at Southeast.

Pig roast set June 27 will raise funds for MDA

The fourth annual Muscular Dystrophy Association pig roast will be held from 3 p.m. to closing June 27 at Diana's Lounge in Sikeston.

The cost is $3 for the all-you-can-eat meal. Drink specials, pool tournaments and door prizes will be available.

Proceeds will benefit the Twin Rivers Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
