The Noon Optimists of Jackson recently donated $250 to the Jackson Swim Team and $500 to the Girl Scouts of America. Robin Thompson presented checks to the executive director of Girl Scouts of Otahki Council, Laura Hinkebein, and swim team president Nancy Gillard.
Facilitated by the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Cape Giardeau Parks Department, the "Rediscover Your Cape" weekend will include tours of the Red House, Cape River Heritage Museum, Old St. Vincent's, the Glenn House, Fort D and Old Lorimier Cemetery with one ticket. Tickets are available at the door from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday; or at the CVB, Cape Chamber of Commerce, the Arena Building or Osage Centre. The United Way L.I.F.E. Initiative and Jefferson Elementary School are co-sponsoring a Health and Wellness Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson Elementary School. In addition to information booths sponsored by community health agencies, health screenings will be available. Mr. Ciggy Buttz will make an appearance, and games and face painting will be available for children.
The annual "Pieces of the P.A.S.T. Quilt Show and Table settings" in Anna, Ill., will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Davie School. A "History of Quilting" exhibit will be on display, quilters will be working and at 10:30 a.m. a quilt turning will be held. Lunch will be served at the Country Cupboard in the old Potato Barn. The Cape Girardeau Alternative Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, north of the Red House Interpretive Center parking lot. Missouri-grown strawberries; farm-raised and pastured chickens, eggs and pork; gourmet lettuce and fresh-cut herbs; breads, cakes and pies; gourmet canned items; goat milk soap; plants; fruits and vegetables (watermelons, squash, sweet corn and peppers); and all-natural pork and beef will be featured. The Cape Girardeau farmers market will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, continuing until October in the parking lot at 2001 Independence St. Items offered have been grown or produced within a 75-mile radius of Cape Girardeau. Seasonal produce and fruits, arts and crafts, baked goods, eggs, honey, cut flowers and plants will be available.
