Riverside celebrating National Library Week

Patrons of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a book drawing every time they visit the Riverside Regional Library during National Library Week, which ends Saturday. Other National Library Week opportunities to help the library include the Friends group, reading to children, homework tutoring, helping at the book sale, promoting or performing at a program, petitioning for funding or volunteering at the library. Storytimes for ages 1 to 8 will be held at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and April 26 at the Jackson branch, at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Perryville branch, at l and 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Altenburg branch and at 1:15 p.m. today at the Oran branch. Relay for Life plans plant sale in Jackson

A plant sale to benefit Relay for Life will be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at 1332 Rosebud, Jackson. The event is sponsored by Parents Without Partners.

Scott County historical society meeting Saturday

The Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Riverside Regional Library in Benton, Mo. Special guest Betty Rider of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Scott City, will join the group. Everyone welcome. Presentation on Lincoln's funeral to be held Sunday

The Cape Civil War Roundtable will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road. The speaker will be history and mortuary science student Tony Fleege from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He will give a presentation on Lincoln's funeral. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Car wash planned for Boys and Girls Clubs

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23 and 1 to 4 p.m. April 24, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Delta Delta Delta sorority will hold a car wash at Rhodes on Sprigg Street. Donations will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeast Missouri.

Friends of the Park Day scheduled for April 23

The 20th annual Friends of the Park Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 23 at Capaha Park. Southeast Missouri Hospital will provide first-aid coverage. All are welcome to help clean and beautify the park and stop by the hospital's tent for ice water, helpful items and information.

Cape Girardeau Parks Day plans cleanup

A Cape Girardeau Parks Day clean up, organized by the Civil War Roundtable of Cape Girardeau, will be held at 8 a.m. April 23 at Fort D. Dress appropriately to remove debris and old wall material from the inside of the 1930's structure. Tree removal, trimming and painting are also planned. The city will provide a porta-potty and Dumpster. Refreshments on site and hot dogs from the parks department will also be provided.

Talent contest at Christ Church of the Heartland

Christ Church of the Heartland, 720 Bertling St., will host a talent contest April 28. The junior division (ages 6 to 12) will compete at 6:30 p.m., and the senior division (ages 13 to 21) will compete at 7:30 p.m. The first-place winner will serve as a representative at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis, Tenn. Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. Proceeds from the admission fee will be donated to the church's building fund. For entry forms or information please call Marlene Creech at 335-4677. Entry deadline is April 22.

Northern Cherokee Nation to hold meeting

The Northern Cherokee Nation of the Old Louisiana Territory will hold a meeting for enrolled members at 3 p.m. April 30 at the American Indian Center of the Heartland, 811A Broadway. The meeting's topic will be to put the finishing touches on the tribal federation recognition petition to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and updating all tribal rolls. All tribal members of the Northern Cherokee Nation of the Old Louisiana Territory are urged to attend and proof of membership will be required.

Park Day at Jackson planned for April 30

The annual fix-up and clean-up day will be held at 8 a.m. April 30 at shelter No. 1 in Jackson City Park. Awards for public participation will be given. If a group cannot make it the day of the event, projects can be arranged. Sign up at the event. T-shirts and refreshments will be available.

Nurses' association sponsors rummage sale

SoutheastMissouri Hospital College of Nursing's National Student Nurses Association will hold a rummage sale at 6 a.m.May 6 at the Bank of America parking lot on William Street across from Sears. Proceeds will benefit local charities and the association.

Pennies From Heaven auction to be held May 6

Doors open at 5 p.m. May 6 at the Arena Building for the Pennies From Heaven auction. Silent auction opens at 5:30 p.m., regular auction at 7:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the "We Can Weekend" program of Southeast Missouri Hospital Regional Cancer Center, which supports cancer patients and their families as they cope with the difficulties of cancer. 'X' Broadway cruisers to meet next month
