Central Junior High holds orchestra, band concert

The Central Junior High School eighth-grade orchestra and band will present a concert at 7 p.m. today in the old gym at Central Junior High School. Parents, friends and family are invited to attend.

Jackson soccer team plans teen dance

The Classic United U-12 girls soccer team is sponsoring a dance for all fifth- to eighth-graders from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Jackson Jaycee Hall. All area students are invited to come out for a fun time. An admission will be charged and concession stand will be open. The Jaycee Hall is located across from Pioneer Orchard. 'Hogs & Dogs' day offers pet adoption, Harleys

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri and the Harley Owners Group will team together for "Hogs & Dogs Day" Saturday at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park. Harley owners will have bikes on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Humane Society will show dogs available for adoption from 1 to 4 p.m. with raffle tickets for a 2005 Ford Mustang and shirts for sale. The Mustang is also on display at the mall. For more information, call the shelter at 334-5837.

Rummage, bake sale on tap Saturday

Trinity Luthern Church in Egypt Mills will hold a rummage and bake sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. Used clothing, household items, knickknacks and homemade baked goods will be available. The sale is sponsored by the Sunday school and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to benefit Concordia Seminary students. From Cape Girardeau take Highway 177 north to County Road 634. Turn left onto County Road 634 to County Road 635, then turn left onto County Road 635, then right onto the church lane. For more information, call the church at 334-4549.

Historic Halliday Plaza series resumes Sunday

The Halliday Plaza series on Historic Cairo will resume at 2 p.m. Sunday in the parish hall of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 600 Washington Ave., Cairo, Ill. The program will feature the history of fire fighting in Cairo back to the Civil War era and will be narrated by local historian Louise Ogg, a member of the church and curator of the Cairo Custom House Museum.

Teen Challenge thrift store grand opening set

Teen Challenge will hold a grand opening Tuesday of its new thrift store at 61 N. Clark St., which has more than 9,000 square feet to display merchandise. The Teen Challenge Auxiliary has operated a thrift store for the benefit of Teen Challenge International of Mid-America since 1975. All proceeds support the 136 residential students who are being helped to overcome past addictions through a relationship with Christ.

Reunion planned for former National Guard members

Former members of the disbanded National Guard 140th group are planning a fifth reunion at 6 p.m. on March 18 in the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson. The group is preparing to dedicate a memorial to all National Guard members, past and present, at Cape County Park on May 15. Those linked to the 140th who have not received an invitation should call Gerald at 243-2243, Paul at 335-0547, or Gene at 334-1459 by Tuesday. Current members of the 1140th are also invited to the reunion and memorial dedication.

Class for those with arthritis starts Tuesday

A 12-week People with Arthritis Can Exercise class will be offered from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday and continuing until May 17 in room 132 at Cape First Church, 254 S. Silver Springs Road. For more information, call 334-4421.

Saxon Lutheran cabins shown on History Channel

The historic log cabins at Saxon Lutheran Memorial in Frohna, Mo., will be part of the video program, "Back to Blueprint: Loghome," on the History Channel, at 1 p.m. March 5. The memorial, owned by the Concordia Historical Institute, the Department of Archives and History of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays, from March to November. March brings workshop on past lives, soul travel

A free workshop on "Past Lives, Dreams, and Soul Travel" will be held at 3 p.m. on March 5 at Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Relay For Life of Cape County meets March 8

Relay For Life, the signature event of the American Cancer Society, is an overnight event that mobilizes communities nationwide to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Cape County, sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital, will hold a committee meeting at 6 p.m. on March 8 at the Drury Southwest building. New Hamburg group to perform 'HillTop Opry'

"HillTop Opry," a variety show featuring performers from New Hamburg, will be held to provide good, clean, affordable family entertainment and fun. Concessions will be available. Doors open at 6 p.m. on March 12, with a pre-show at 6:30 p.m. and show at 7 p.m. at the St. Lawrence Parish Center.
