League of Women voters meets tonight

The League of Women Voters will meet at 7 tonight in the Hirsch Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Former secretary of state Rebecca Cook will speak about redistricting and how it works. The meeting is open to the public.

Six-week program will help people cope

Beginning Experience of Cape Girardeau is sponsoring a coping series to help widowed, divorced for separated people adjust to this change in their lives and make a new beginning by learning about the grief process.

The program is Christian-based, and meetings last about two hours and will be held on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning this week through Nov. 15 at Divine Home Realty, 125 S. Broadview, Suites 7 and 8, in Cape Girardeau. For more information, call Bernie at 335-4093 or Shirley at 334-0445.

Singles group plans events for October

Parents without Partners have several events planned for October. They include:

General meeting and orientation at 7 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 22 at the Community Counseling Center in Cape Girardeau.

Adult hayride in Brewer at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

Family outing at the Iron Mountain Railroad at 1 p.m. Oct. 21.

Singles dance at the VFW hall in Cape Girardeau at 8 p.m. Oct. 27.

New Direction Divorce Support Group, 7-9 p.m. Friday and Oct. 26 in the Generations room at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

Family Halloween party at 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at the home of Pat Hill in Jackson.

Caring Council agency plans monthly meeting

The Community Caring Council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 19 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

The featured presentation will be the video "The Best is Yet to Come," provided by Dr. Dan Steska, Cape Girardeau School District superintendent.

He will be available for questions. All are welcome to attend.

Chicken supper will benefit Bell City fund

A fish and chicken supper will be held from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Bell City Community Center on Highway N. It is sponsored by the Bell City Community Betterment Committee and goes toward the building fund. Fish, chicken, side dishes, dessert and soft drinks will be served.

Family-style dinner slated at Kelso Oct. 21

A family-style dinner will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the St. Augustine Parish School in Kelso, Mo. Carry-outs will be available beginning at noon. The menu will feature chicken and dumplings, dressing, baked ham and all the trimmings. Adult meals will be $6 and children's meals will be $3 with children 5 and younger eating free.

The event is sponsored by St. Ann's Sodality.

Cape Girardeau library plans October events

There are several events planned at the Cape Girardeau Public Library in October.

They include:

A legal and financial seminar from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 16. The topic is planning tools for families and caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease.

The Great Books series continues from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 18. The title is to be announced.

A book discussion group will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 to review "Midnight Champagne" by A. Manette Ansay.

The Poetry Coffee House will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 29. It is Poe Poetry Night.

Cape Parks unit plans Halloween activities

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring Halloween Happenings at the Osage Community Center beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday with a coloring contest and pumpkin-carving or decorating contest. Participants must bring their own pumpkins and carving tools.

A costume carnival will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be prizes for the best costumes. A magic show will begin at 3:30 p.m.
