Extension office to teach about beef cattle breeding; Rummage sale will benefit mission trip; St. Augustine plans trivia night in Kelso; PAWS offering free spays and neuters

Extension office to teach about beef cattle breeding

A meeting for beef producers on timed artificial insemination will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the University of Missouri Extension Center, 684 West Jackson Trail, Jackson. A ribeye-sandwich dinner will be served by the SEMO Cattlemen. Speakers include Dave Patterson, a University of Missouri beef specialist who has led research in development of the timed artificial insemination protocols and other members of the livestock team who will discuss successful estrus synchronization and artificial insemination. Jackie Atkins, a Mizzou graduate student, will discuss how to manage a successful estrus synchronization program. Richard Randle, University of Missouri veterinarian, will discuss herd health considerations prior to estrus synchronization and artificial insemination. Mike Smith, Mizzou chair of animal science, will discuss estrus synchronization products, how they work and what they cost. Two graduate students working on synchronization research will discuss their latest results. Dan Bush will focus on special needs of heifers while Dan Schafer will give the details of the 98 percent success rate in recent breeding seasons. The program is free. Rummage sale will benefit mission trip

A mission fund raiser to support St. Paul Lutheran Church's Haiti Lutheran mission trip will be held by St. Paul Lutheran Church and co-sponsored by Thrivent Financial Chapter 30281. The rummage sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28, and from 7 a.m. to noon Jan. 29 at St. Paul Church Fellowship Hall, 223 W. Adams St., Jackson. Sale items include clothes, knick-knacks, and household and baked goods. All items are half price Friday and there is a bag sale on Saturday. St. Augustine plans trivia night in Kelso

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 for the St. Augustine Home and School Association's fourth annual trivia night held in the school gym in Kelso, Mo. Questions begin at 7:30 p.m. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided. There is an admission fee for adults and high school students. Teams may have a maximum of eight to a table. Door prizes and cash prizes will go to the top three teams. For reservations or more information, call Paula or Mark Castleman at 264-3647 or Carrie Landewee at 264-1350.

PAWS offering free spays and neuters

The Pets are Worth Saving Inc. board of directors will hold a letter writing contest in honor of National Prevent a Litter Month, celebrated in February, and Spay Day USA, celebrated Feb. 22. To enter the contest to win a free spay or neuter, participants should write a letter to PAWS explaining why their companion pet needs sterilization and what the positive benefits of sterilizing animals are. The letter should also include the entrant's name, address, phone number, species of companion pet (dog or cat), gender of pet, age of pet and name of pet. Entries should be sent to PAWS Inc., 139 E. Vienna St., Anna, Ill. 62906. Letters will be accepted until Feb. 5 from Illinois counties including Union, Johnson, Pulaski, Alexander, Massac, Pope and Hardin. Winners selected by the board will be announced by Feb. 17. PAWS anticipates funding the sterilization of eight to 12 dogs and/or cats during this special event.
