Boy Scouts to begin annual popcorn sale

The annual Boy Scouts of America popcorn sale begins Friday. Area Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be out in their neighborhoods offering nine varieties of popcorn. More than 70 percent of the sales stay in the community to support local Scouts. Sales continue through Oct. 15. For more information, call the Scout Service Center at 335-3346.

Run to remember cardiomyopathy victim

The daughters of Vicky Keller will hold a 5.35 mile run and a 1 mile fun run/walk at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the old Riverfest course. This location is at the Convention and Visitor Center's parking lot adjacent to Buckner's Brewing Co. on Broadway and Main Street in Cape Girardeau. Entry fee includes meal and a T-shirt. The run is being held to honor Keller, who died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and to help others with the disease. Keller, an avid runner who was born in 1955, graduated from Central High School and Southeast Missouri State University. She married Ronald Keller in 1975 and had three children.

Kluesner family to reunite Sunday at Cape park

The Kluesner family plans to reunite Sunday. Attendees are asked to bring a basket dinner. The reunion begins at noon at Cape County Park shelter No. 4.

Crump School alums get together Oct. 2

Jimmy Joe Golf scramble on tap in New Madrid

Motorcycle ride to benefit nursing scholarship fund

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on Oct. 2 for the X-Mayors Motorcycle Ride at Fort Defiance Park in Cairo, Ill. The 40 mile, police-escorted ride will depart from the park at 11:15 a.m. Registration fees include meals, a bike show and door prizes. Bikers and vendors are welcome. A tattoo contest and scavenger hunt will also be featured. The event will benefit the JDSM scholarship fund, which sponsors nursing scholarships. Fun for all can be found at Jackson harvest day

The 37th annual Pioneer Pick 'Ur Own harvest day will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at Pioneer Apple Orchards, Highway 34 West, Jackson. Special events include crafts, food stands, a baby contest, king and queen contests, live music, rides, soap making, apple butter cooking, cider making, children's games, an animal petting pen and mazes. Quilt show set for Oct. 2 at Arena Building

The River Heritage Quilters Guild will hold its biannual quilt show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 2 and from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Arena Building in Cape Girardeau. There is an admission charge. Learn how to square dance in Jackson

Greeks play softball for children's charity

Delta Delta Delta is sponsoring Frats @ Bat Oct. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southeast Missouri State University intramural fields. The public is invited to watch the softball tournament. Florsheim picnic slated for Oct. 9 at county park

The Florsheim Picnic will begin Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at Cape County Park North shelter No. 5. Potluck meal will be served at 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a dish, drinks and lawn chairs. Plates, napkins and flatware will be provided. Fishing will also be available. No license is required for children under 16 or adults over 60.

Walk through the woods planned for Oct. 9

A forestry tour and woods walk is planned for 9 a.m. Oct. 9 at Jo Dixon Tree Farm. The farm is located west of Castor River on Highway 34 on the Wayne/Boll-inger County line. Evidence of timber stand improvement, prime tree growth and value, cut a tree per year program, EQIP programs and wildlife enhancement will be seen. Lunch is provided at the event sponsored by the Eastern Ozarks Forestry Council, University of Missouri Extension and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Wildlife courses offered at extension office

Wildlife management classes are being offered at the Cape Girar-deau County Extension Center, 684 W. Jackson Trail, Jackson. Topics include "How to Manage Woodlands for Wildlife and Timber," Oct. 11 and 12; "Managing Ponds and Fish," Oct. 19 and 20; "Managing Your Timber," Oct. 25; and "Quail Management," Oct. 27. Saxon Lutheran Fall Festival on tap in Frohna

The 24th annual Saxon Lutheran Fall Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 9 at Saxon Lutheran Memorial, 296 Saxony Memorial Drive in Frohna. The past will be revisited with horse and wagon rides, freshly made apple butter and homemade bread prepared in outdoor ovens and sold by the slice. New this year will be a blacksmith shoeing horses. Many crafters will don period-style clothing. Activities from long ago will be revisited including cider, broom and soapmaking. In addition to a variety of food stands, a hog will be butchered and yarn spun from wool. Small animals will also be on display. Children will sing German songs in the afternoon. Ride-a-thon to aid horsemanship program

A horse ride-a-thon is planned for Oct. 9 at Silver Hills Guest Ranch in Shawneetown, Mo. Riders of all ages may register at 8:30 a.m. The ride will begin at 9 a.m., followed by lunch at 11 a.m. Entry fee includes lunch and a T-shirt. Riders collecting the largest amount in pledges and donations will be recognized. All proceeds benefit Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship, which offers therapeutic riding for children and adults living with disabilities. For more information, call (573) 235-3040.

AHA prepares for local Heart Walk at Arena Park

The Cape Girardeau 2004 American Heart Walk is slated for Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. The non-competitive three-mile walk raises funds to support heart disease and stroke research and educational programs in the Cape Girardeau community. Miss Fall Festival coming up in October

The Pi Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma is planning the annual Miss Fall Festival for Oct. 16. Registration for six titles begins at 1:30 p.m. and contests start at 2 p.m. on stage at the Dixie Theater on Main Street in New Madrid, Mo. Categories include infants to 11 months; 1- to 2- year-olds; 3- to 4-year-olds; 5- to 7-year-olds; 8- to 10-year-olds; and 11- to 13-year-olds. Attire is fall casualwear.
