Golf contest planned for Leukemia Society
A golf skills contest fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Arena Golf in Cape Girar-deau. Contests include longest drive, putt-putt scramble and shotgun start. Each contest is divided into children 7 to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 17 and men and women's divisions. Prizes will be awarded. Red Cross topic of 'Independently Speaking'
"Independently Speaking," SEMO Alliance for Disabillity Independence's television program, will air at 5:30 a.m. Sunday on WDKA-TV Channel 49 (Channel 17 on cable) and at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 31 on Cape Girardeau Cable Access Channel 5. Guest will be Sheri Brethold, health and safety instructor and care-giving representative for the American Red Cross, Southeast Missouri Chapter, located in Cape Girar-deau. The topic is services offered by the American Red Cross in the Southeast region.
Robyn Hosp, Jackson band perform Aug. 12
The Jackson Municipal Band will perform at 8 p.m. Aug. 12 at the gazebo on Jackson's courthouse lawn. Special guest will be Robyn Hosp, a soloist and member of various gospel groups. Hosp has gained much local recognition as the partner of Mike Dumey through various dinner theater shows they have produced. Her part of the program will consist of inspirational music. The band's portion of the concert will include "Hits from Broadway," the Scott Joplin classic "The Entertainer" and marches.
Illinois dance to benefit St. Jude on Aug. 13

Family history conference on tap in Columbia
An annual Family History Conference, sponsored by the Missouri State Genealogical Association, will be held Aug. 13 and 14 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center, Columbia, Mo. Topics included by the keynote speaker, Mark Lowe, a certified genealogist, will be Kentucky and Tennessee research and tips on shaping a profile of rural ancestors. Supporting speakers will present "clues from the grave," genealogy Web sites, land records, Missouri settlement patterns, organizing family histories, National Archives research and word processing tricks for genealogists. The fifth annual Old Man River Barbecue Fiesta will be begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Deerfield Lodge. Proceeds will benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates, a group of volunteers who are appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of children whose cases go before a court. A three-day trip to the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain Home, Ark., is being sponsored by the FCE clubs of Cape Girardeau County from Oct. 15 through 17.
