Chaffee German Days begin Friday at park

In its 26th year, the town of Chaffee, Mo., will hold "German Days," beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at Frisco Park. A Western-themed pageant is planned for children from age 1 to high schoolers. Registration forms may be picked up at Montgomery Bank, 102 E. Yoakum St., Chaffee. For more information, contact Rhonda Wessell at (573) 380-9593. German Days begins at 11 a.m. Saturday; the junior division talent show is at noon; the senior division talent show is a 1 p.m. Call Marlene Creech for talent show information at 335-4677.

Post M seeks assistance with family picnics

Post M of the Missouri Division of the Travelers Protective Association is recruiting members to assist with picnics. Two family picnics have recently been held and plans include Aug. 19 as a final picnic date at Cape County Park shelter No. 8. Interested individuals should call post secretary Juanita Henley at 335-9308. The menu will be announced later. Post M, one of the most active posts in the Missouri Division, recently honored three of its members for recognition of 50 years of membership. They were Sam Johnson and Delmar A. Wagner of Cape Girardeau and Fowler C. Jones Jr. of Fairway, Kan.

Red House announces events set for August

  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, Bicentennial book discussion of "In Search of York," by Robert B. Betts. York was William Clark's slave. He participated in the entire Lewis and Clark expedition, stopping in Cape Girardeau as well. Discussion will be led by Natika Rowles, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Girardeau. Bring a lawn chair. In the event of rain, the group meets at the Old St. Vincent's Church across from the Red House Interpretive Center.

* From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the Sons of the American Revolution will be in full military dress on the Red House porch for informal talks about the American Revolution and soldiers from this area who fought in the war and then came to settle here.

* 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12, a program titled "Making and using quill pens" will be demonstrated by Paula Gresham on the Red House Porch.

* On Aug. 19, local artists and craftsmen will demonstrate their craft on the Red House Porch.
