Quilters' Guild meeting and workshop today
The River Heritage Quilters' Guild monthly meeting begins with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. today at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution, Flag Day will be celebrated beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westfield West Park Mall's Pasta House court. A collection of historic United States flags, from the 13 original colonies up to present day, will be on display. The Sons of the American Revolution will don Revolutionary War costume and docents from the Red House Interpretive Center will wear period clothing.
A white collection box marked with Optimist Club, American Legion and Boy Scout Troop 311 identification will be set up on U.S. 61 on the south side of the American Legion Hall for residents to drop off old flags to be retired. On Tuesday Boy Scout Troop 311 will hold a flag retirement ceremony and properly retire the flags.
The Jackson Municipal Band will present its weekly concert at 8 p.m. Thursday at the bandshell in Jackson City Park on Route D, across from Pocahontas Lumber. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Special guests will be Shade Tree Folk Company. The municipal band's portion of the concert features the clarinet section, marches, a collection of Henry Mancini's hits, and "Mighty Fortress," written by Martin Luther and arranged by Darren Jenkins.
All friends and relatives of the Hartles are invited to the family's reunion at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cape County Park North, shelter No. 8. A covered-dish meal begins at noon. For additional information, call Bernice Haynes at 243-4371. Bring lawn chairs and table service.
A fishing tournament to benefit Shriners Hospital will begin with registration at 8 a.m. at Cape County Park North on Saturday. The Missouri Department of Conservation will make a presentation on how to fish and identify species at 8 a.m.; fishing to begin by 9 a.m. Bait will be provided. Registered individuals will have the chance to win a rod and reel or a G-3 jon boat donated by Sparkman Motors. A donation will be collected per family. Fishing ends at 11 a.m. Hot dogs, bratwurst and refreshments will be available for purchase.
A working meeting for the Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society is planned beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. Focus is on the cemetery project. All of the society's meetings are open to the public. The society meets monthly and membership fees include a monthly newsletter. Heartland Care and Rehabilitation Center, 2525 Boutin Drive, Cape Girardeau, has a 1990 Ford 4x4 Ranger Extended Cab XLT 5-speed on display at its building. Raffle tickets are on sale, and the drawing will be Sept. 17 at Capaha Park. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk.
