Scott City Summerfest starts Friday night

Scott City's annual Summerfest begins with the baby contest at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Scott City Community Park stage. A children's pageant will follow the baby contest, and the Miss Summer Teen pageant will begin at 7:30 p.m. The adult karaoke contest and washers begin at 8 p.m. Saturday's festivities begin at 3:30 p.m. with a parade from Bob's Foodliner to the park, a junior talent show on stage at 5 p.m., senior division at 6 p.m.; live music by Manitou from 8 to 11 p.m.; and fireworks at 10 p.m. Carnival rides will be open both nights, and food and games will be available. Oran library changes hours starting Monday

ORAN, Mo. — The new hours of the Oran Branch of the Riverside Regional Library will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The new hours are effective Monday. Signups for the summer reading program, "Catch the Reading Bug," are underway and enrollment is open until the week before the program closes. There will be a summer story hour at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. The theme is insects. For more information, call 262-3745.

Used furniture can be donated next week

There will be a furniture and household item drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through June 7 at Slumberland Furniture Store. A truck in the parking lot will be available for drop offs. Tax receipts for items in good condition are available. The Salvation Army will receive the donations for families in need of items to set up a home. Benefit to be held for Bonnie Young

A benefit for Bonnie Young will be held at 6 p.m. June 20 at the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge. The event will begin with hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and a silent/live auction. The Crystal Blue Band will be providing music from 8 p.m. to midnight. All proceeds will go toward Young's medical expenses. Young is a Jackson resident suffering from multiple myeloma. Peace and Dignity run set for Trail of Tears

The Peace and Dignity Run, in the area only every four years, invites the public to meet the participating runners at 3 p.m. June 22 at Wescoat Shelter (if closed, meet at the Visitor's Center) at Trail of Tears State Park.
