Cape Girardeau Public Library May events

  • From 6:30 to 8 p.m. today the Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation will sponsor a book signing and family program by author Jim Riley. Copies of his book, "The Saving of Dogtown," a children's picture book, will be available. Illustrator Don Greenwood will have an art project for the children.
  • At 2 p.m. Sunday, storyteller Dean Allison will present "Did You Ever Wonder?" in celebration of Older American Month. The program tells why certain birds and spring flowers got their names.
  • At 7 p.m. May 27, the book discussion group meets and will discuss the 2000 Pulitzer Prize nominee,"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by David Eggers.
  • After Sunday, the library will be closed on Sundays until September.

Community Caring Council events

  • Donations for the fourth annual Family Transition Team Garage Sale may be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today for the sale 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the St. Vincent de Paul Center (old Notre Dame gym).
  • At 7:30 a.m. Friday, the Community Caring Council will have its monthly meeting at the Kasten Community Development Center, 937 Broadway, Suite 102. Ruth Dockins will make a presentation.

Civil War Roundtable meets for cookout

The Cape Civil War Roundtable will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fort D for a spring cookout. The main course will be provided by the club.

Cemetery association holds annual meeting

The annual meeting of the Old Goshen Cemetery Association will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery. All are encouraged to attend. Those unable to attend who would like to make a donation for maintenance and improvement of the grounds may make checks payable to the Old Goshen Cemetery Association and mail to Carolyn Hahs, 499 Ann Drive, Jackson, Mo. 63755.

Cemetery holding memorial service

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McGuire Cemetery on Route OO two miles south of Burfordville. A brief business session will follow the service. Contributions for cemetery maintenance will be received. Those unable to attend who would like to make a donation may make checks payable to McGuire Cemetery fund and mail to Earl Stovall, P.O. Yoga class to be held on courthouse lawn

An hour of yoga will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday on the Common Pleas Courthouse lawn, compliments of Yoga on Broadway. Bring a yoga mat or blanket. In case of rain, a new date will be announced.

Antique tractor club holds Old Timer's Day

Registration begins at 8 a.m. May 24 for the River Hills Antique Tractor Club's annual Old Timer's Day display and tractor pull at Seminary Picnic Grounds in Perryville, Mo. There will be several displays of antique tractors, equipment, crafts and other items.

Memorial Day program set in Mound City

MOUND CITY, Ill. — The Mound City National Cemetery will hold its annual Memorial Day program beginning with a concert at 9:30 a.m. May 24 at the cemetery. The program starts at 10 a.m. Guest speaker will be Peter C. Heins of the Department of Veterans Affairs. He supports a network of 27 national cemeteries in nine Midwestern states. A presentation on the Mound City National Cemetery will be made by Richard Kuenneke, a local historian.
