Altenburg Homemakers sponsoring home tour
ALTENBURG, Mo. -- The Altenburg Homemakers are sponsoring a Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Altenburg. Five homes with Christmas and fall decor will be open to the public. Also open will be the first Lutheran College of the Missouri Synod, the Tower Rock Winery and a craft show.
Tour homes include Robert and Virginia Breuer, David and Celeste Wunderlich, Harold and Doris Grecke, Kevin and Meredith Gruenwald and The Inn. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children and are available at Tric's Restaurant, Gas-A-Mat and each home on the tour, as well as from members of the Altenburg Homemakers.
A large antique quilt display will be featured and refreshments served at The Inn. Proceeds are donated to charitable organizations.
Prudential workers give time at counseling center
Cape Girardeau Prudential Financial employees and their families, along with Community Counseling Center staff personnel, recently participated in Prudential's eighth annual Global Volunteer Day by cooking and serving lunch for patients at the counseling center.
Each of Prudential's 40,000 employees picks a charity of their choice and plans a volunteer project. In turn, Prudential donates $1,000 to that charity. Linda Puchbauer spearheaded the local project.
Raffle to be held with basketball tournament
The Scott City Kiwanis Club will be holding a raffle in conjunction with its 31st annual Basketball Tournament at Scott City High School this weekend. Tickets to win a 27-inch color television and DVD player cost $1 each or $5 for six. Tickets may be purchased on-site or in advance at Roth Hardware or Midtown Cafe in Scott City, or from Kiwanis members Don Swanner at 264-4011 and Tim Gregory at 264-1315. The raffle drawing will take place before the trophy ceremony on Sunday.
At the tournament, the Kiwanis will also be selling tickets to the club's New Year's Eve dance and breakfast, and another raffle to be decided at that time. Dance tickets cost $25 per person or $50 per couple. No one under 21 will be admitted. Raffle ticket prices are the same. Winners of the New Year's Eve raffle will be awarded a three-day, two-night trip to Branson, Mo.
Cape Chess Club to hold tournament Saturday
The Cape Girardeau Chess Club will be holding a November Chess Open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Zimmer Radio Group building, 2 S. Mount Auburn Road. The tournament will be divided into an unrated division and a U.S. Chess Federation division.
Registration is from 11 to 11:45 a.m., with the first game beginning at noon. Prizes for the unrated division will be provided by RealRock 99.3. Cash prizes will be awarded for the USCF division. There is a $15 entry fee to play in the USCF division.

Cape AARP chapter to meet this afternoon
The Cape Girardeau County chapter of the AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church at Broadway and Caruthers. The program, entitled "Selecting and Caring for Your Holiday Plants," will be presented by Dr. Derald Harp, with the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Agriculture. There will be door prizes and refreshments.
Jackson businesswomen will sponsor pageants
The Jacksonian Charter Chapter of the American Business Women Association will again be sponsoring the Miss Jackson Scholarship Pageant, Miss Christmas, Miss Junior Christmas, Miss Holly and the Little Miss Snowball and Little Miss Snowflake pageants at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.
The winner of the Miss Jackson contest will go on to the Miss Missouri pageant. The Miss Jackson Scholarship Fund was able to give away over $1,500 in scholarship money last year. This fund is financed by many area merchants and businesses.

Learn about giraffes at the Cape library
Each month, Library Safari, for children ages 3 to 7, discovers a new exotic animal through stories and activities at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. At 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, listen to stories about giraffes and make a mini giraffe pencil holder to take home. For more information, call 334-5279 or stop by 711 N. Clark.
Modern Woodmen youth club starting in Cape
A new Modern Woodmen of America Youth Service Club is starting in Cape Girardeau. The club will have its first activity at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pop's Pizza, located at 409 N. Clark. Children up to age 16 are invited.
Holly Bearden will lead the club, and Ronald Ledbetter of Essex, Mo., a local Modern Woodmen representative, will sponsor the club's monthly activities. For more information, call Ledbetter at 283-5925.
