Friedrich descendants hold reunion in Jackson
The descendants of Jacob and Marguarita Friedrich held a reunion recently at Delmonico's restaurant in Jackson. Games, guitar music and singing were enjoyed. The next annual reunion will be held at Delmonico's on Aug. 21, 2005.
Single parent events scheduled for September
Parents Without Partners has planned the following events for September:
Line dancing outings will be held at Circle S Saddle, Highway 25 and Route K, Gordonville from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 29.
On Friday, a general meeting and orientation at Riverside Regional Library, Union Avenue and Adams Street, Jackson will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. A board meeting and second orientation session will be held at the same location and time on Sept. 17.
The group will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the commuter parking lot near Wal-Mart to caravan to Lambert's Restaurant in Sikeston, Mo.
Group members will also meet on Sept. 12 to attend the SEMO District Fair in Cape Girardeau.
A "Remember When" singles dance will take place Sept. 18 at the Cape Girardeau VFW, 1049 N. Kingshighway.
A 6 p.m. Amigo Dinner is planned for Sept. 25. All members should bring a dish.
The group will round out the month with a bowling outing at the new Jackson Lanes on Main Street in Jackson from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 26.
Cape public library sets September calendar
The Cape Girardeau Public Library has scheduled the following events on its September calendar:
On Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., ArtStarts, a monthly program for children 3 to 7, will feature retired art teacher Esther Hartmann and youth services coordinator Sharon Anderson mixing information with imagination. Registration is preferred and participants are asked to bring smocks.
The library will be closed on Sept. 6 for Labor Day.
The Friends Preview of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation Book Sale will be held on Sept. 10 from 5 to 6 p.m. The sale will be open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 10, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 12.
Registration is required for the Kindermusic program, planned for ages 2 to 5 p.m. at 10 a.m. Sept. 16.
An informational program about Monarch butterflies including habitat, growth and mass migration will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.
A two-part Internet training session for those with little or no experience with computers will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 and 29. Registration is required. For more information, call 334-5279.
A group meeting on Romantic poets will be held at Capaha Park in shelter No. 4 at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27.
The month will end with a discussion on "Midwives" by Chris Bohjalian on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
Scott County women to meet on Thursday
Scott County Women in Agriculture will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the USDA Office on Highway 77 in Benton, Mo. All women are invited. Those who share an interest in gardening, cooking, farming, family activities or helping the community are invited to attend. Pageants on tap in Advance for Labor Day
The Little Miss and Little Mr. Advance contest for 3- to 6-year-olds will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at Advance City Park. Attire is formal/Sunday dress and registration is limited to children who reside in the Advance School District. A Labor Day pageant will begin at 11:45 a.m. Attire is casual/ sportswear, and age categories are from birth to 18 years old. No preregistration is required. Contests upcoming at SEMO District Fair
Beginning at 3 p.m. Sept. 12, the SEMO Fair Pageant will be held at the R&R Tent at the SEMO District Fairgrounds in Cape Girardeau. Divisions include Tiny Miss, Little Miss, Young Miss, Preteen, Teen Miss and Miss SEMO Fair. For more information, call Melody Hutson at 335-9252.
Holiday weekend brings Neighbor Day festivities
The 36th annual Neighbor Day Festival at the Benton Ballpark will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and continue until midnight Saturday. Revolving around the theme of "Hi, Neighbor," a mystery neighbor walks the grounds and when he or she hears that greeting, rewards that person with a small cash prize. In addition to pageants for Little Mr. and Miss and Miss Neighbor Day, the festival will offer a new Tiny Mr. and Miss Neighbor Day for babies. The Chamber of Commerce booth draws for hundreds of dollars of free attendance prizes. Other Friday events include sky divers at 6 p.m., pageants at 6:30 p.m. and music by Night Shift from 9 p.m. to midnight. Saturday begins with a 10:30 a.m. parade featuring pageant winners, floats and bands, followed by an antique car show at 10:30 a.m., an antique tractor pull at noon, a horseshoe tournament at 1 p.m., a kiddie tractor pull, races and contests at 4 p.m., a greased pole climb at 6 p.m., sky divers and the junior and senior talent show divisions at 6;30 p.m., a greased pig chase at 10 p.m. and J.R. Bollinger and the High Yield Band from 9 p.m. to midnight. Registration for 4-H, FFA, home extension and agriculture exhibits is open from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday. Categories include needlework, fine arts, ceramics, models, photography, woodworking, crafts, floriculture, food preservation and preparation, fruits and vegetables, and field crops.
Diversity is theme of early childhood seminar
"Celebrating Diversity: A Circle of Friends" is the theme of the 2004 Early Childhood Seminar, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at Dempster Hall on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Emmanuel Ngomsi, president and senior consultant of Universal Highways Inc., an experienced educator and trainer. Lunch and break-out sessions will follow the keynote address. Topics include ADHD, abuse and neglect of infants and toddlers, leadership of directors, serving children with diverse needs, nutrition and physical fitness, building a reader, creativity, grant writing, lesson plans, and diversity awareness. 1140th HHQ family support group meets
A support group meeting for the 1140th HHQ will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at the National Guard Armory in Cape Girardeau. Community members can help support the group monthly on the third Thursday when CiCi's Pizza donates a percentage of each sales ticket.
