Women's club to meet about tax issues

Cape Girardeau County Republican Women's Club will meet at 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Cape Girardeau Holiday Inn to learn about tax issues slated to be on the April 8 ballot. Melvin Gately, co-chairman of the Citizens Finance Tax Force, will speak.

Rally to raise awareness of sexual violence

To raise awareness of the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence, a "From Victim to Victorious Rally" will be at 6 p.m. April 11 at shelter 4 in Capaha Park, Cape Girardeau. The event will take place rain or shine. Invited guests will speak about the impact of sexual assault/abuse on the community.

SEMO-NASV, located at 63 Doctors' Park, is an advocate for those affected by sexual trauma. All services are free.

Texas students help Habitat for Humanity

Ten students from Denton, Texas, chose to spend their spring break helping the Cape Girardeau Habitat affiliate with a home now under construction. The group of students from the University of Northern Texas stayed at Cape Bible House while helping those in need.

For over 16 years now, the Cape Habitat affiliate has helped those in need of a home help themselves. Cape Habitat is currently building a neighborhood at the corner of West End and College in Cape Girardeau.

The Denton Bible Church group also worked under the supervision of Jim Meyer, Habitat's full-time construction manager. For more information about Habitat, call 334-9728.

Court of Honor pays tribute to U.S. soldiers

Located near the Pasta House at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park, the Court of Honor salutes military personnel with a large American flag and identifying banner.

Area residents are invited to submit names of loved ones serving in the military, which will be displayed in the court. A "Messages to the Military" wall features a large roll of paper for people to write messages or draw pictures that will be forwarded to the troops every 10 days.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's First Friday Coffee will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Show Me Center.

Jackson chamber committee to meet

The tourism committee of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the chamber conference room.

The chamber has 32 teams signed up for the golf tournament scheduled for April 11. Call 243-8131 and sign up for that standby position. Some hole sponsorships are also available.

Cape library to have program on parrots

Children ages 3 to 7 can learn about parrots at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark. Participants will take home their own paper parrot to sit on their shoulder. This is the last animal safari of the season.

Historical alliance to meet April 13

The Southeast Missouri Historical Preservation Alliance will meet at 2 p.m. April 13 at the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University. The alliance is open to all interested in historic preservation and promotion. This will be the third organizational meeting. A proposed mission statement and organizational structure will be discussed and approved.

Member organizations are asked to name a permanent representative and an alternate to serve on the alliance. Publicity and promotion of activities will be discussed, along with plans for observances during National Historic Preservation Month, which is May. The May calendar of events will be reviewed and developed. For more information, call Bill or Barbara Port at 335-1420.

Counseling center holding benefit events

The Community Counseling Center Foundation will hold the second annual Community Benefit Wine Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. April 11 at Deerfield Lodge.

Ticket price includes an elegant wine glass, wine samples, hors d'oeuvres, live music by Saxy Jazz and hourly raffles for gifts and prizes. Wine by the bottle and case will be available for purchase.

The foundation is sponsoring its 2003 semiannual Antique and Collectibles Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building in Arena Park, Cape Girardeau.

A preshow sale will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Dealers may sign up and reserve a space by calling Larry Essner at 334-1100 or Elmer Schetter at 335-8733.

Book sale to be held at Cape Girardeau mall

Friends of the Library will hold a giant book sale from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 26 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 at Westfield Shoppingtown West Park in Cape Girardeau.
