Committee to discuss engineers' draft traffic study

A committee appointed to advise the city of Jackson on the $100,000 traffic study it commissioned a year ago will get a chance to review the engineers' draft report and make recommendations at a meeting Thursday.

The Jackson Board of Aldermen already has received copies of the draft report. The advisory board will give the engineers feedback and be able to ask questions before the final draft is presented to the Board of Aldermen. Reviews of the 100-page report already are favorable.

"I am extremely impressed with the work this firm has done," Mayor Paul Sander said at Tuesday night's Board of Aldermen meeting.

The report includes an existing major street plan, a long-term transportation plan, prioritized long-term projects, projected costs and funding mechanisms, and recommended planning and engineering guidelines.

Tuesday night, the board received news that a moderate-income senior citizens apartment project proposed by RCH Development Inc. received state approval Friday. The approval means the Jackson Senior Center will receive a $200,000 state grant that will be used to help build a new $450,000 center next to the 38-apartment complex.

The center will be built on West Main Street, just east of South Lacey Street.

The Community Development Block Grant was contingent on both projects being approved. The senior center already has been approved.
