In other activities, he helped found the Scott City Chamber of Commerce, served on the first youth soccer program and coached swimming and baseball teams. He also served the Kiwanis Club and Future Business Leaders of America.

McKeon served the Shawnee District in major leadership positions the past 11 years. He was district chairman as well as chairman of committees for "School Night to Join Scouting," membership drives and "Friends of Scouting." He is a member of the council's executive board and has assisted the council's National Jamboree selection committee.

He has served with the Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion, Rotary and Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce. He is also a recipient of the Shawnee District Award of Merit.

The award is the highest honor a local council can present to an adult volunteer of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is presented to those volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the Scouting program. Nominations are recommended by the local council and approved by the national council.
