PITTSBURGH -- A private cheerleading coach has been convicted of having sex with two teen-age girls he had taken to London.

Scott Hayward, 34, was found guilty Wednesday of transporting two minors out of state to have illegal sex. The coach, who was acquitted of charges involving a third teen, faces up to 15 years in prison.

The assaults occurred during an 11-day trip Hayward took with the girls in 2000, ostensibly for an international competition.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina Oberdorf said Hayward knew in advance that the team wouldn't be competing.

Prosecutors said Hayward drank with and sexually assaulted the girls.

Hayward denied that he planned the trip to have sex with the girls and testified that he did not recall any sexual contact. DNA tests, however, confirmed that Hayward's semen was on clothing of two of the girls.

Hayward and his wife, who didn't make the trip and wasn't charged, owned the now-defunct Pennsylvania Cheerleading Center Inc., which ran teams out of two gyms in suburban Pittsburgh.
