Lamplighter FCE
The Lamplighter FCE Club met Oct. 21 at the home of Linda Sebaugh. The meeting was called to order by the president and the hostess gave the devotional. Skeins of yarn were donated for people in Romania.
The club received a $50 prize for its 1st place display at the SEMO District Fair.
A thank-you note was read from Gayla Volz for the flowers she received during an illness and short stay in the hospital.
The committee responsible for the annual Christmas display at Cape County Park gave a progress report.
Members were reminded of the FCE District bus trip to Our Lady of the Snows Shrine.
A food shower for the club's adopted family will be held at the November meeting. A discussion was held to assist a family in the community in which the husband has had a stroke.
A program on the culture of Romania was given by Teresa Hinkebein and Sebaugh gave a mini lesson "Eliminate the negative, accentuate the positive." The club enjoyed an international supper featuring foods from Romania.
The next meeting was held Thursday at the home of Dorothy Hahs.
New McKendree UMW
New McKendree United Methodist Women of Jackson met in the church fellowship hall Nov. 2 for the installation of officers for 2005, followed by a memorial service for members of the UMW who passed away during 2004. A short business meeting was also held.
Bessie Buck, Southeast District UMW president, presided over the installation of officers. They are Marilyn Fronabarger, president; Tandy Wendel, vice president; Mary Klaproth, secretary of evening meetings; Wilma Wilcoxson, secretary of day meetings; Amy Cook, treasurer; Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources; Kay Millham, Michelle Litz, Pat Schreiner, Barbara Burnette and Dorothy Heise, committee on nominations; Elwanda Corbin, spiritual growth; Pat Lynn, social action; Shirley Patterson, education and interpretation; Barbara Hartle, membership nurture and outreach; Wilma Summers, mission ribbon coordinator; Dawn Detring, historian; Gail King and Wilma Wilcoxson, supportive community co-chairs; and Wilma Summers, volunteer. Circle chairpersons are: Eggers, Dorcas; Corbin, Esther; Barbara Hartle, Hope; Sue Jones, Mary and Martha; Violet Reynolds, Naomi; and Pat Holloway, Wesleyan; and Patsy Johnson, members at large. Jewell Seabaugh from Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville also participated with leading the group in singing. She is New McKendree UMW's shepherdess.
Corbin conducted the memorial service for the following UMW members who passed away this year: Carlyn Carron, Emily Fulenwider, Rita Linebarger, Olga Hill and Loetta Helderman.
A short business meeting was held after the memorial service. Fronabarger presided. She reported that the following local UMW members attended the Fall District meeting in Kennett, Mo.: Tandy Wendel, Fronabarger, Eggers, Hartle, Lynn and Patterson.
The next meeting will be held Dec. 7, at which time special membership pins will be presented to two members. The UMW Weekend will be held Jan. 8 and 9, 2005.
Laureate Alpha Rho
The Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Nov. 4 at the home of LaRue Brown. A musical program was presented by Carla Wills. Erma Vaughan, president, conducted the business meeting.
Members brought household items for the Women's Safe House.
The Exemplar-Preceptor Banquet was held Thursday at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girardeau and a Christmas luncheon will be held Dec. 2 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club.
Cape Girardeau County AARP #4041
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP #4041 met Nov. 1 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.
The program was "The Missouri Department of Conservation Nature Center in Cape Girardeau" presented by Steven Juhlin of the Department of Conservation.
The nominating committee submitted the following names for officers: Laverne Nothdurft, president; Grace Hoover, vice president; Betty Wilson, secretary; Bob Harper, treasurer. Board members are: Phyllis McClanahan, 1 year; Helen Leimbach and Marge Janssen; two years. All were voted in for 2005.
Church Women United
The area Church Women United met Nov. 5 at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. There was a brief business meeting with Barb Yallaly, vice president, presiding. She passed out schedules for the 2005-2006 meetings and asked that members sign up their church as a meeting place for special observances or Bible study and board meetings and be turned back in at the Dec. 3 meeting.
Meta Siemers announced that the Red Cross Blood Drive will be held the last week of March and members will be helping Monday, Wednesday and Friday of that week at the new Red Cross Blood Center on Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau.
Helen Lohmeier, corresponding secretary, will send cards reminding members of the Dec. 3 meeting at which we observe Jesus' birthday. Members are asked to bring personal items to be given to the mothers at the Women's Safe House in Cape Girardeau. Lipstick, nail polish, cologne, jewelry, etc., will be used to make up Christmas bags for the women.
There was a discussion that May Friendship Day be changed to the second Friday in May due to the fact that several members have mother-daughter banquets on the first Friday and are not able to attend the CWU event. It was voted on to change the date.
A total of $4,737 in kits and money was received from the local area CWI that was taken to the Mini Festival of Sharing in Dexter, Mo., on Oct. 9.
Walkers at the CROPWalk held Oct. 17 at Cape County Park North collected $2,545. It was sent to Church World Service. Of that amount, 25 percent will be donated to the local FISH Pantry and the balance will be used by Church World Service to feed the world hungry. There were four local churches represented at the walk. There will be a meeting on Jan 26, 2005, at First Christian Church to begin planning the walk for 2005.
Adopt-a-Leader notes will be written by Martha Sanderson. These notes are sent each month to the women who are members of the city council in Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
The World Community Day program was held with the 2004 theme being "Faith, women shape the future for peace." Hazel Blank was coordinator for the program and those participating were Shirley Patterson, Helen Lohmeier, Mary Thomas, Pat Foster, and Marge Janssen.
