American Legion Post 158

At a recent meeting of American Legion Post 158 Rosie Wells, home from Iraq, was welcomed by legion members.

Jim Nelson reported contributions to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship Program from Bob and Adell Hartle in memory of Iva Jaco; Wanda Abbott in memory of Ina Nothdurft; New Salem United Methodist Church at Daisy, Mo.; and Verla and Charles Mangel, personal contribution.

Commander Whitener explained the plan for joint sponsorship with the Jackson Elks and VFW for the Sept. 11 Marine Corps League program to take place at Freedom Corner in Cape Girardeau.

New Salem UMW

The New Salem UMW of Daisy held its regular meeting on Sept. 1 at the home of Verla Mangels with nine members present.

A barbecue meal with home-made ice cream was held first with spouses being guests.

The meeting was called to order by Jackie Kurre, president.

The UMW will be cooking the meal for the Vigertone meeting on Oct. 5 with each member bringing two pies.

A motion was made that a basket be filled with cleaning supplies which will be sent to the hurricane victims in Florida.

The third quarter pledges will be sent to the Susanna Wesley Home.

Roberta Seabaugh had the pledge service program, "Peacemakers responding to God's grace."

Young Americans' 4-H Club

The July 22 meeting of the Young Americans' 4-H club was called to order by Clint Heuer, president, at Jackson City Park. Gavin Seyer and Belinda Strack led the pledges. Those with July birthdays were recognized.

The minutes were read by Tori Schweer and Heuer gave the treasurer's report. Reports were given on woodworking, crafts, dairy, gardening and foods project meetings.

Gary Schweer, Zach Schneider and Strack reported on the conservation trip to the Watkins fair.

Nine members participated in county Achievement Day and eight members attended 4-H Camp.

The Kirchdoerfer family will plan a water park fun day at Farmington.

The meeting was adjourned and members and families enjoyed a fried chicken picnic supper.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met Aug. 3 and 17 at Port Cape in Cape Girardeau.

On Aug. 3, Monty Kyle, president, introduced Larry Dowdy and Scott Watson of the Little River Drainage System for the program. Dowdy reported the federal government issued a mandate in 1907 to establish a drainage system for the area. The system is designed around the Diversion Channel and Mississippi River. The levees run for 950 miles.

The meeting on Aug. 17 was called to order by Kyle, pledge was led by Joe Perez and prayer was led by Sandy Behring. Larry Simon introduced Nancy Jernigan of the United Way as guest speaker. She reported on the topic, "Be a partner in changing the lives in Southeast Missouri."

John Eggimann reported the barbecue night will be at Vernon Auer's cabin again on Sept. 21. Spouses are invited to the event this year.

Simon reported that it's time for the SEMO District Fair and to help the 4-H Club in their stand. The dates and times are Sept. 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to close.

Oak Ridge After-School 4-H

The Oak Ridge After-School 4-H club met Wednesday in the Oak Ridge Elementary School library with 14 members and two leaders present.

Rebecca Shrum presided over the meeting. Amanda Lappe and Shelby Mangle led songs and McKenzie Elam led the pledges.

The group discussed the work on posters and decorations for the "Lights On" carnival.
