American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 met Sept. 8 at the Post home with 20 members in attendance. Jane Stepens, Madeline Hente and Jackie Lowes were hostesses for lunch prior to the meeting. Frieda Howard won the monthly drawing.

Barbara Yallaly, president, called the meeting to order and Catherine Allison opened with a prayer.

Members returned the small grocery sacks distributed at the August meeting filled with nourishing food snacks for emergency/transient feeding. Yallaly delivered the sacks to the Rev. Terry Wildman at the Shelter of Hope.

Monetary gifts were approved for a Girl Scout Troop, the United Way of Southeast Missouri and the American Legion Children's Home and Orphanage located in Oklahoma.

Linda Kern, education chairman, asked members to bring clothing items (socks, mittens or gloves, caps and underwear) to the next meeting on Oct. 13 meeting and will be given to Jefferson School.

Southeast Black & Gold

The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of University of Missouri Alumni Association met at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. Six board members were present.

Jill Kohut gave the treasurer's report. Larry Simon pointed out that the MAA still owes the chapter reimbursement from our Chapter allotment for the food expense from our June Student Picnic. Kohut will check with Stephanie Heffernan, our new MAA liaison, concerning the status of the reimbursement. Kohut will turn the treasurer's books over to Melody Hagans, the new treasurer, within the next few days.

Roger Guyot is checking on various local places to hold watch parties.

Tom Frasher reported that Nov. 15 is the next deadline for applying for a Diversity Grant from the MAA. We are again considering treating local youth groups to a movie at Cape West 14 Cine. Simon suggested the chapter consider the youth at Family Resource Center this year. He will find out the number and age group of the youth served by that center. Frasher suggested we also consider some of the 4-H youth.

Guyot, our MAA Chapter's representative on the Extension Council, attended the retirement party for Brian Gerald, the County Director for Agronomy. The party was held at the Extension Center on Aug. 17.

Frasher reported that the chapter has been invited to serve as a co-host for a political forum for candidates in the race for the U.S. Representative of the 8th Congressional District in Missouri. The Candidates are Jo Ann Emerson, Tommy Sowers, and Larry Bill. The event will be held during either the week of Oct. 18 or Oct. 25. Location has not been determined.

Frasher urged us to conduct our high school visits early this year, before the Dec. 1 deadline for students to apply for MU general scholarships. The deadline for our Chapter's $4,000 MAA scholarship is Feb. 2, 2011. We distributed newly published "There's only one Mizzou" books to all present, to be given to the schools during our visits.

Frasher gave special thanks to Jamie Phenix for setting up a Fan Facebook page for the Chapter. She mentioned that Melissa Miller worked with her in setting up the page. Phenix demonstrated how to access and navigate the page.

Simon reminded those present that we will once again be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army from 5 to 9 p.m. during the weeks of Nov. 29 and Dec. 6. Simon will schedule this with the Salvation Army and line up the volunteers. Hagans and Phenix reserved their time slots at the meeting.

Hagans will ask Richard Proffer about the contact information for the student members who attended the student picnic in June. At our last meeting we decided to keep in touch with and encourage those students.

The next meeting will be on at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the Extension Center in Jackson

Town & Country FCE

The Town and Country FCE Club met Sept. 16, for a barbecue dinner at the home of Judy Niswonger. After dinner, Carolyn Thompson, president, presided over the business meeting. Becky Davis was a guest. Roll call was answered to "ways to challenge the brain." Shirley Heise had a Books of the Bible Puzzle Game. Pennies were collected for Coins for Friendship. A thank-you note was read from the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry for the food the club donated. A money making fun calendar for the month of October was given to the members.

Plans were finalized for the International Dinner with the study of the country of Nigeria. Jerry McClanahan, who has been to Nigeria, will present the program illustrated with slides. Linda Thompson gave out recipes of Nigerian dishes for the members to prepare for the dinner.

Members will bring Halloween candy for Halloween Treat Sacks for Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center with the date of delivery to be announced at the Oct. 14 meeting. Also, members will plan to host a Halloween Party for the students at Parkview State School.

Sue Jones reminded members to bring Christmas Cards for the Military to the Oct. 14 meeting.

Seven members will be attending the Fall District meeting on Oct. 5 at Patterson, Mo., with the theme "FCE -- Fruits of harvest." Members attending are to bring an item for the auction. Also, members brought dolls to the meeting for State Advocacy Day to be taken to the Fall District meeting.

Plans for NAFCE Week were discussed and finalized. The club will plant a tree at the University of Missouri Extension Office, display the fair booth in the window of Ross Furniture Store and attend the Presbyterian Church on Oct. 10, followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

The club made plans to have a hayride at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Pioneer Orchard. Members are to invite guests. A wiener roast will be enjoyed.

Lois Seabaugh and Mary Klaproth have volunteered to baby sit for the Grand Family Conference on Oct. 14.

The club will sign up to participate in the Osage Community Garage Sale to be held on Nov. 6. Profits will be used for community projects.

Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bella Italia.

Thompson presented the program on "ways to challenge brain fitness." In addition, Hearth Fire #17 "Someone's saying ... electronic manners count, too!" was presented.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 at the home of Sue Jones which will be the International Dinner and program on Nigeria with members bringing Nigerian dishes for the meal.

Lamplighters FCE

There were 12 Lamplighters FCE members gathered in the home of Jo Ann Hahs for their September meeting. Linda Sebaugh, vice president, called the meeting to order. After club collect was sung, the hostess shared a devotional thought and a humorous reading: "dart test" and "girlie wisdom".

During the business session, the following items received attention: Jackie Kurre reported that the Lamplighters' 6 X 2 1/2 foot banner is now being made; Judy Myers reported on the club trip to Springfield, Ill., where members toured the Lincoln Museum, Lincoln's Tomb, New Salem and Petersberg, Ill.; Sebaugh reported that the vice presidents decided that Lamplighters would be responsible for the Huck Toweling workshop at Leader Training the last of October; Roberta Seabaugh and Gayla Volz reported on the County Council meeting held Sept. 2; Members voted to continue reading at Oak Ridge R-6 School again this year, but instead of individualized aprons for each book, members will wear their Lamplighters' apron and use a stuffed animal reading buddy.

Sebaugh shared this information with the members: an autism blanket workshop will be held Oct. 11, at the Cape County Extension Office in Jackson; Jo Ann Hahs and Verla Mangels will be attending the Fall District meeting on Oct. 5 in Patterson, Mo.

A program "generic vs. name-brand medications was given by Jo Ann Hahs. Dorothy Hahs taught how to do huck toweling.

Next month's PJ Party will be held on Oct. 21 at the home of Mangels. Roll Call will be a flower pot exchange. Linda Freeman will have the program on year-round gardening.

Young Americans 4-H

The meeting of the Young Americans 4-H Club was called to order by Claire Illers on the Aug. 19 at Grace Methodist Church.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Illers and Taylor Bowers led the 4-H Pledge. Roll Call was answered by "What school are you attending"?

There were 18 members and 16 adults in attendance. There were three visitors attending the meeting, Lindsey, Caitlen, and Devon Allen. Gary Schweer made a motion to accept them as new members with a second from Bowers. The motion carried.

Project reports were given by Illers, housing; Belinda and Anthony Strack, gardening and foods meetings; Tyler, Clayton and Tricia Kirchdoerfer, dairy meetings; Tyler Kirchdoerfer and Alex Eftink on field crop meetings.

Premium money from the County Fair was handed out.

Information was given on the "When Abbey Smiles" Benefit Dinner and Fun Day. Schweer made a motion to donate $50 for the benefit with Anthony Strack seconding. The motion passed.

Report forms are due at the Extension Office by Oct. 8.

If members wish to participate in the Christmas Cards to the Military, the cards will be due at the October meeting. Do not seal them.

Clover Kids Grant Schaefer, Mia Foote, and Danielle Ehlers showed off the canvas bags they made during their meeting.

Election of officers for 2011 was held and the results as follows: Tori Schweer, president; Tricia Kirchdoerfer, vice president; Lydia Cameron, secretary; Anthony Strack, treasurer; Brittany Showmaker and Ellie Foote, game leaders; Clayton Kirchdoerfer and Haley Ehlers, song leaders.

The meeting was adjourned with a motion by Ehlers with a second by Bowers.
