American Legion Auxiliary

The Louis K. Juden American Legion Unit 63 Auxiliary met Aug. 12. Soup and sandwiches were served to 20 members by Edna Smith, Gerri Stone and Irene Winston.

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Yallaly, president. Catherine Allison, chaplain, offered a prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegience to the U.S. flag and the Auxiliary preamble.

The charter was draped for members Patsy Kimbrel and Iola Amelunke. Both were past presidents of the auxiliary, a vital part of the organization and will be greatly missed.

The minutes of July's meeting was read by Mildred Varvell, secretary, and approved.

Myrna Powers, treasurer, gave the financial report. It was approved and set aside for audit.

Linda Kern, membership chairperson, has begun collecting dues for the 2015-2016 year.

Jane Grojean reported the Amen Homeless Center in Delta has a new roof and is completely paid for, thanks to the auxiliary's donations along with others.

Yallaly mentioned that the 50-50 money goes to the district department's nurse's scholarships.

There was discussion about the auxiliary's involvement in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse. More on this later.

Members agreed to give $100 to sponsor bingo at the Veteran's Home in December.

Members agreed to raise the money we pay band members who play at monthly birthday parties at the Veteran's Home from $12.50 each to $20 each musician.

Items are to be brought each month for donation to the Amen Center and Jefferson School.

The following announcements were made: Sept 3, S.A.L.T. Helpful info and lunch; Sept. 9, next American Legion Auxiliary meeting; Nov. 1, American Legion District meeting in Sikeston, Missouri; and Nov. 5, American Legion ham and bean dinner

Before closing meeting, Yallaly gave the group some tornado tips for survival.
