Zonta Club

The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau met July 5 at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Cheryl Hill, president, inducted new member Christine Beardslee.

Heather Brooks shared information regarding the transportation sales tax being proposed on Aug. 2 ballot.

The "What is Zonta?" video was shown. It describes some basics of Zonta, including its founding in 1919, the purpose of supporting women in nontraditional and leadership careers, and statistical facts such as having 35,000 members in more than 60 countries. Other organizational ties were discussed such as with the United Nations, UNIFEM and UNICEF.

It was announced that Linda Godwin, an area native who is now an astronaut with NASA, will be the Celebration Award recipient at the Women of Achievement Luncheon to be held in October. An update was also given regarding the District 7 conference to be held in Cape Girardeau Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.

St. Mary CCW

The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met on July 21 in the Monsignor Huels Room at St. Mary Cathedral. Dolores Pobst led the group in "Prays for our nation."

Nancy King, president, welcomed Mary Bauer and her family. Bauer sang some inspirational music.

A thank-you note was read from Sister Rita Schonoff for a donation to Migrant Whole Health Outreach and from NCCW for a donation to Water for Life.

Pobst, church commission chair, announced that the diocesan 50th anniversary opening celebration will be held at St. Mary Cathedral on Aug. 28 at the 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. Masses.

Dolores Gibbar reported that one bereavement dinner was served since the last meeting.

The group will continue to collected items for layettes and family food boxes for CWU. St. Mary will hold the Bible study and board meeting on Friday.

New member Mindi Rice was introduced. Pat Eftink showed slides from her recent trip to Europe.

Refreshments were provided by July Circle.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 18 in the Monsignor Huels Room.
