New Salem UMW

Ten members of New Salem United Methodist Women of Daisy met in the home of Colleen Lukefahr on Aug. 11. Dorothy Hahs voiced the opening prayer.

Eight sick calls and shut-in visits were made during the month. Final plans were made for the Vigertone meeting that the UMW will be preparing the meal for in the fellowship hall on Oct. 5.

Each member brought a food item and a paper product that will be taken to a family in the community.

A picnic supper was planned for the next meeting which will be at Verla Riehn's. Roberta Seabaugh will have the pledge service at the next meeting.

Shirley Grebe presented the program "When God calls." She announced the UMW is 135 years old.

Refreshments were served by the hostess.

VFW Auxiliary

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 3838 met Aug. 11 at the post with Judy Thrower, president, presiding. Three new members were voted in and committee reports were read.

Chairman Judy Biester reported on the Youth Volunteer of the Year award and the Patriot Pen contest. The deadline for entries for Outstanding Youth Volunteer is Feb. 1, 2005. Ages for entry are 12 to 15 years old. Nov. 1 is the deadline for the Patriot's Pen contest for grades six, seven and eight. Those interested in entering these contests should contact Biester at (573) 794-2146.

Buddy Poppy chairman Dorothy Points announced the Poppy Contest at the Council of Administration meeting in Columbia, Mo., on Oct. 1 will be Christmas ornaments using the Buddy Poppy. Members are to bring entries to the September meeting.

Thrower announced the following: Patriot's Day will be honored with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11 and all flags will be flown at half staff and POW Day is Sept. 21. The auxiliary's monthly bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers are needed.

State commander Gene Hoeltage and state president Grace Shockley will make their official visit at the District meeting on Sunday in Charleston, Mo. Shockley will make her official visit to the Missouri Veterans Home at 10 a.m. Friday. All members of the district are invited to attend.

Pearline Kruse, rehabilitation chairman, was presented a 50-year pin by Thrower. Carolyn Moore, national home chairman, received the first place state award for the most Campbell's Soup labels received at the state convention in July. Members are asked to continue saving the labels and bring them to meetings or drop off at the post.

Phyllis Dodds, steak night chairman, announced the next steak night will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 4. Members are needed to assist with the meal and pies and cakes are also requested.

Donations were made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon and to the Department of National Presidents Scholarship Fund.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the post.

Eastside Homemakers

The Eastside Homemakers met at the Golden Gate Restaurant in Jackson on Wednesday. A business meeting was held after the luncheon. The meeting opened with "The Pledge of Allegiance," led by Maxine Southard, president.

The next meeting will be Sept. 20 at Pizza Inn in Fruitland.

Oak Ridge FCE

The Oak Ridge FCE Club held their August meeting in the home of Ruby Hitt.

Kim Begley, chairpersonn of the Green Bear Committee, reported there are 130 green bears made by the Oak Ridge FCE Club and ready for presenting to the Green Bear Organization. Betty Dellinger, FCE and Elks' member, presented a check for $150 from the Jackson Ladies' Elks' Auxiliary to be given to the project through the Oak Ridge group.

A local National Guard member's family has been chosen by the Oak Ridge FCE to receive a $50 certificate for buying school supplies and necessities for children while the father of the family serves in Iraq. This will be a monthly project for the club.

Members' husbands will be guests for a September salad supper planned for 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the home of Marilyn Retherford. All members will bring salads.

The club will celebrate National FCE Week by buying a book for the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson.

Dellinger presented some possible Christmas decoration favors to be used at the December County Council Meeting as the Oak Ridge Club will be hostess for the occasion.

A Hormone Replacement Therapy report prepared by Linda Freeman was given by Hitt.

Nelda Crader reviewed with the club the Cape Girardeau County winners of the submitted club reports which included Oak Ridge members. Carole Jo Byrd received first place on community successful projects and Retherford received first place for the report she made on literacy.

Enrollment and dues for the 2005 club year were made by the nine members present.
