American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 met Aug. 13 for the regular monthly meeeting. Hostesses were Marilyn Ritter and Shirley Myracle.

The 2003-2004 officers were installed: Iola Amelunke, president; Betty Cato, vice president; Dorothy Klein, historian; Marilyn Ritter, chaplain; Barbara Yallaly, secretary; Myrna Powers, treasurer; and Muriel Day, sergeant at arms.

Thank-you notes were read for the favors sent to Missouri Girls State and from Barbara Johnson for the tree planted at Capaha Park in memory of her father. A donation was made to the Community Counseling Center. Fern Schlimme reported the blood drive held at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center on July 30 was very successful. The auxiliary will again sponsor a Girl Scout troop.

Cato and Klein presented Amelunke a $1,000 check from the Southeast Missourian for nominating the "Spirit of America" winner, John "Doc" Yallaly.

Frieda Howard is collecting dues for 2003-2004. The education chairman requested school supplies be brought to the September meeting.

A motion was made by Gerri Stone and seconded by Lawana Wulfers to move the Sept. 10 meeting to the SEMO District Fair. Members are to gather about 11:30 a.m. near the Grace United Methodist Church shelter north of the Arena building.

Kage FCE Club

The Kage FCE Club met on Aug. 14 at the home of Judie Herbst and were given a 4-H demonstration by Tricia Kirchdoerfer, a member of the Young Americans 4-H Club. She demonstrated how to make creamy fruit salad. Everyone present had a sample.

President Dortha Strack presided over the business meeting. A thank-you note was read from the Young Americans 4-H Club for the club's gift toward the Clover Kids' Camp attended by 16 boys and girls.

A report was given on the recent horse show at Flickerwood Arena. The show benefited the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship Program.

Forty-six people joined the FCE-sponsored trip to The Muny in St. Louis on Aug. 5 to see "South Pacific." The trip included dinner at Bevo Mill Restaurant in St. Louis.

Members brought items for the MAFCE Conference in Columbia to be sent to people serving in the military in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Judy Moore and Strack each received letters from servicemen since the July meeting. The club will prepare Christmas greetings for "Military Mail" and bring them to the September meeting.

Strack called attention to the need for help at SEMO District Fair in the Farm Fun Station. Barbara Marshall, Martha Slaten and Joan Meyer expressed willingness to help.

Shirley Palen announced the Alzheimer's Memory Walk will be held on Sept. 20, and she accepted contributions for this event in which she will participate.

The next meeting will be Sept. 18 with Linda Farrow as hostess.

New Salem UMW

The United Methodist Women of New Salem United Methodist Church at Daisy held their regular meeting on Aug. 13 in the home of Shirley Grebe.

Two shut-in visits and 13 sick calls were made.

Extra silverware will be purchased for the church kitchen.

A motion was made to buy the chicken for the annual UMW picnic in September from Bill's Place in Biehle, Mo.

The second-quarter pledge will be given to a needy family in the community.

Betty Henry gave the program about Mexico where she and her husband had visited. She also showed pictures.
