American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary met Aug. 11 for a potluck meal. Hostesses Shirley Myracle and Marilyn Ritter furnished the entree. Guests at the meeting were Scott McClanahan, Grace United Methodist Church board president, and Alecia Ficher, assistant minister at Grace. A donation was given to the church for the use of its dining area for American Legion Auxiliary meetings for the past five years.
Liz Lafoe and Rebecca Martin gave a brief account of their experiences at Missouri Girls State. There were 738 young women in attendance this year. The unit was commended for making 350 favors for the girls throughout the week.
Ritter, chaplain, draped the charter in memory of Dorothy Scowden. Fern Schlimme gave a report on the blood drive the unit sponsored on July 29. School supplies and money will be taken to Jefferson Elementary School by Ritter, education chairwoman.
Treasurer Myrna Powers will send to department the obligations and also a donation to the Community Counseling Center. Barbara Yallaly will contact the Missouri National Guard about sending items to Iraq.
Members will meet at the Legion Hall at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 for a field trip.
Ritter made a prayer book that was taken to the convention for competition. It was chosen best out of 13 for cover and contents.
Yallaly installed the 2004-2005 officers. They are Caryn Michel, president; Betty G. Cato, vice president; Yallaly, secretary; Powers, treasurer; Dorothy Klein, historian; and Muriel Day, sergeant at arms. Iola Amelunke, the outgoing president, was presented a past president's pin having served for two years.
VFW Auxiliary 10495
The VFW Auxiliary 10495 met Thursday at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson with Darlene Fluegge presiding.
Members are selling raffle tickets in front of Ross Furniture in Jackson at the annual Homecomers celebration. The drawing will be held in November at the VFW breakfast. Prizes for the raffle are a handmade quilt with matching pillows, Main Street Fitness gold certificates for two, handcrafted quilt rack, $50 gift card to Kidd's Convenience Store, $35 gift card to Wal-Mart, $20 gift card to Rhodes 101 and a birdhouse made and donated by Ceramo Pottery.
Grace Wille, Americanism chairwoman, announced that plans are being made for a POW-MIA Walk and program at Brookside Park Memorial on Sept. 18. The walk will start at the swimming pool in Jackson City Park and will end at Brookside Memorial. Lineup will be at 8:30 a.m. The public is invited to participate.
The next district meeting will be held in Charleston, Mo., on Aug. 29. Grace Shockley, department president, and Gene Hoeltge, department commander, will be special guests at this meeting.
Barbara Slinkard, hospital chairwoman, said the group will sponsor bingo at the Missouri Veterans Home Saturday.
Bernice Haynes, cookbook chairwoman, reported that the few cookbooks left will be sold at at Homecomers.
Refreshments were served by Nita Brazel and Kathryn Stueve. The next meeting will be Sept. 9 at Riverside Regional Library.
Capaha Scottish Rite's Women's Club
The Capaha Scottish Rite's Women's Club met at Ponderosa in Perryville, Mo., for the August meeting. Luella Armstrong presided and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Omega Hawkins voiced a table prayer.
Laura Corse, program chairman, and Cynthia Alfaro, hostess, introduced the guest speaker, Diane Kohm of the Family Support Group.
The Sept. 13 meeting will be held at the Country Kettle in Biehle, Mo. Mary Mouser will be program chairwoman, and Lillian Birkman will be hostess.
Kage FCE Club
The Kage FCE Club met Thursday in the home of Barbara Marshall. She gave the devotional.
It was reported that Dortha Strack, president, Judy Moore, Jobyne Daume and Opal Collins attended a volunteer appreciation event at Heartland Care and Rehab Center on Aug. 5.
Several members expressed an interest in the Crystal Club at the Lutheran Home. The purpose would be to clean patients' eyeglasses. This project was suggested by John Marshall.
A request was made for patriotic fabric for a quilt project undertaken by Quilt Guild members for military personnel.
The annual chicken and dumplings dinner for members and their families will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.
Dues for 2005 were paid by members in attendance and officers were elected. They are, Strack, president; Martha Slaten, vice president; Collins, secretary; Judie Herbst, treasurer, Barbara Marshall, game and song leader; and Verna Vogel, parliamentarian.
A program on bullying was given by Strack.
The next meeting will be held in the home of Inez Statler with a program on Romania.
Town, Country FCE Club
The Town and Country FCE Club met at the home of Linda Thompson Thursday for its international program on Romania. Members brought Romanian dishes and enjoyed dinner together. After dinner, Aurica Corana from Bistrita, Romania, and her daughter, Betty Spence, presented a program on life and customs in Romania. Members brought yarn to be sent to Romania.
Shirley Heise, Mary Klaproth and Carolyn Thompson recently returned from attending the 2004 National Association for Family and Community Education Annual Conference in Richmond, Va. Heise was the recipient of a scholarship to the annual conference in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2005. Darlene McCain, Carolyn Thompson, Linda Thompson, Heise and Klaproth will attend the state MAFCE annual conference to be held in Columbia, Mo., Aug. 25 through 27. Heise is the Southeast District recipient of a scholarship to the state conference.
The following officers were elected for 2005 and will be installed in December: Heise, president; Lois Seabaugh, vice president; Klaproth, secretary; Margie McAnally, treasurer; Sue Jones, reporter; Norma Schrieber, songs/games; and Linda Thompson, cards/flowers.
A donation of $25 was given to Walk in the Light Ministries.
Club outing will be to Homecomers on Thursday.
The club will meet at the home of Schrieber at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 to finalize the SEMO District Fair booth plans.
The next meeting will be Sept. 9 at the home of Sue Jones.
Cape County AARP
The Cape Girardeau County chapter of AARP met Aug. 2 at Grace United Methodist Church.
Rebecca Fulgham presented the program, "The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri."
On Sept. 10, there will be a fall fitness walking event at the Osage Community Centre. Lee and Joan Flor are new members.
A board meeting will be held Aug. 30.
Church Women United
The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United met Aug. 6 at St. Mary Cathedral for Bible study and a board meeting. Ellen Shuck was Bible study leader; Psalm 139 was discussed. The board meeting was conducted by Joyce King, president. Vera Koen, treasurer, reported on the recent CROP sale. The profits from the sale will be donated to the Heifer International Program providing animals for Nepal. Other donations included Young Life and the Scholarship Fund.
The Awareness Luncheon will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. Speakers will be from various service agencies in the community. Church World Service school kits for the Mini Festival of Sharing at the Dexter, Mo., fairgrounds on Oct. 9 will be donated by CWU member churches. Donations for the Salvation Army will also be accepted at this meeting. It is in need of personal items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.
Offerings received at May Friendship Day were given to the SEMO Network for Sexual Violence along with donations of juice, water and snacks.
The Cape Girardeau Area CWU is responsible for planning the state assembly on March 13 and 14.
The meeting was closed with prayer by Pat Foster. The next Bible study and board meeting will be at Second Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 1.
