Kage FCE
Judie Herbst prepared and served breakfast in the park for the Kage FCE Homemakers Club at its monthly meeting at Cape County Park. Dortha Strack, president, presided over the meeting. Her tip of the day was: Have a plan for signaling for help.
Tickets were sold for the 4-H benefit dance and auction to be held at the Jackson Elks Club. Proceeds will go to repair the 4-H food stand at the SEMO District Fair.
A contribution will be made to Camp Daybreak, a camp for children with diabetes, to be held this month.
Herbst will collect dolls at the September meeting from members for the annual Child Advocacy Day.
Barbara Marshall and Linda Farrow are working on the Kage booth for the SEMO District Fair.
The club discussed the favors that will be made for the state conference to be held in October at Drury Lodge. A workshop will be planned.
A memorial will be sent by the club to the FCE Foundation in memory of club member, Neva Jackson.
Barbara Schaffner presented the program, "Buying and Using a Microwave Oven."
Prior to the meeting, four 4-H demonstrations were presented. From Young Americans 4-H Club, Becka Ray demonstrated brushing a dog's teeth; Clint Heuer demonstrated firearm safety and cleaning firearms; and Brett Heuer demonstrated deer food plots. From Arnsberg 4-H Club, Dustin Oehl demonstrated what a computer can do.
The next meeting will be Thursday at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
Lamplighters Homemakers Club
The Lamplighters Homemakers Club met at the home of Judy Myers for its July meeting.
Celery seed, the spice for July, was passed out and its uses discussed.
The club discussed the birthday meal at Shogun Sushi Bar and Restaurant, the tour of JoAnn Hahs' greenhouse and shipping company and the exchange of handmade quilt blocks to be made by each member into a wall hanging or decorative item of their choice.
Plans were finalized for the SEMO District Fair booth. Committee members Linda Sebaugh, Karen Eakers, Linda Freeman and Hahs will meet to begin final plans and construction.
The international meal will be at the home of Roberta Seabaugh on Aug. 21. The menu, decorations, and information will be from Mexico. Jackie Kurre, Bev Meyer and Freeman will be in charge of planning the event.
Reservation forms were distributed for those who wish to attend "The Music Man" at Stages in St. Louis at 4 p.m. Sept. 27. Saturday will be the deadline to sign up.
It was announced that the state meeting is upcoming and will be held at the Dury Lodge. Conference forms can be found in the July edition of the Messenger. Early-bird sign-up must be in by Aug. 25 for the reduced price. Membership registration forms may also be found in this month's issue of the Messenger.
A vote was taken and was approved to assist the Oak Ridge Homemakers Club in making Christmas baskets for the Elks Donation Drive in December.
It was reported that Hahs received first place on her club report that was sent to state.
Teresa Hinkebein gave an outstanding report titled "Patriotic Past and Present." She was able to incorporate the achievements of her family members who served in the military through the generations with information about many rituals of military proceedings, including the meaning of each fold of the flag at military funerals. Some humorous and interesting facts about presidents past and present were mentioned.
St. Mary CCW
The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met in the Huels room July 17.
Judy DeClue distributed copies of the treasurer's report.
Dolores Gibbar reported two bereavement dinners were served in the last two months.
Hazel Blank presented the program on the organization commissioner.
Possible dates for a bake sale are Nov. 22 and 23 with all circles involved.
The Christmas party and December meeting will be Dec. 11.
The next meeting will be Aug. 21. The program will be shared memories from a recent trip to Lourdes and Fatima.
Zonta Club
The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau held its monthly membership meeting Aug. 5 at Bella Italia restaurant. President Polly Holten presented a program highlighting a recent trip to Zonta's 61st International Convention held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She and club member Kathy Swan joined more than 2,000 women from 67 countries around the world at the biannual event.
During the business meeting, plans were discussed for the fifth annual Women of Achievement luncheon scheduled for Oct. 24.
Nancy Hunter NSDAR
The executive board of Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met at the Cape Girardeau Public Library on Aug. 6 to make program plans for the following year. The executive board members are Ruth Lang, Mary Lou Lett, Lois Spaulding and Catherine Allison.
The new officers to serve in 2008-2009 are Lang, regent; Spalding, vice regent; Doris Jean Arnold, chaplain; Allison, recording secretary; Carol Geittmann, corresponding secretary; Dorothy Points, treasurer; Lett, registrar; Mick Stiver, historian; and Patsy Robert, librarian.
The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library on Broadview Street.
