Lamplighters FCE

Members of Lamplighters FCE Club arrived at their May meeting dressed in pink to celebrate the theme of the meeting, "Pink is Pretty." Karen Eakers, hostess, gave a devotional entitled "Where is Daddy?" Roll call was answered by each member telling what foods they canned or preserved by freezing.

During the business session, the following actions took place: plans were finalized for the yard sale on June 8 at Eakers' home and for the birthday party being given at Jackson Manor June 4. Teresa Hinkebein reported the committee bought and delivered eight books to area hospitals for the "Books for Newborn" emphasis.

Linda Sebaugh reported on the spring district meeting held in Patterson, Mo. At this meeting, the importance of making two copies of both sides of all debit and credit cards was shared. One of the copies should be given to a trusted friend or family member outside the home and the other placed in a safe place at home or bank deposit box. Also attendees were informed about the importance of exercising to "Stay strong, stay healthy." Verla Mangels reported 21 reservations had been made for the Muny Opera. Deadline was June 14. Jo Ann Hahs asked for volunteers to help with reading to summer school students at Oak Ridge Schools.

Eakers gave a program on the "benefits of producing, eating, and preserving your own food." Mangels shared information about "the dangers of vitamins/supplements."

It was announced that June 10 would be an Autism Weighted-Item sew day at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson and the June 20 Lamplighters meeting would be the club's birthday party.

To end this meeting, "What's in your purse?" and "How many words can you make beginning with the letter P?" were played. To supplement the treasury, a donation jar was passed and funds collected. A wrapped, used purse exchange was held and the person wearing the most pink, Gayla Volz, won the hostess gift.

Port Cape was the scene of the June 20 Lamplighters FCE birthday party. There were 13 members in attendance.

It was reported that Cottonwood Center and Daisy 4-H Club received $25 donations from the club.

The success of the birthday party at Jackson Manor and the garage sale were discussed.

Jackie Kurre, president, reported on the June 6 County FCE Extension Council meeting where it was voted to step up production of weighted items for the Autism Center. Members were reminded of the state FCE meeting to be held in Jefferson City, Mo., Sept. 18 through 20, and of the fall district meeting Oct. 10 at the Assembly of God Church in Doniphan, Mo. Karen McLane and Mangels will represent the club on the tour to the Muny Opera.

It was decided to have a combination club meeting and autism sew day 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 18 at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Oak Ridge.

It was announced that applications are being accepted until Oct. 15 for the $300 Cape Girardeau County FCE scholarship, funds available for 2014 spring semester. For forms and guidelines, contact any county FCE club or committee members Dortha Strack, Nelda Crader, and Kurre.

A secret pal birthday gift exchange was held.

St. Mary CCW

St Mary Council of Catholic Women met June 20 in the Huels Room.

Sister Lucille Zerr led the opening prayers.

Robert Harris, master gardener, presented the program on the five community gardens in Cape Girardeau. His mother, Bernice Harris, accompanied him. She has assisted him from the beginning. Not only do the young people learn how to grow vegetables and flowers, but they learn life skills as well. They share in the produce which is grown and which is also given to food pantries for distribution. New programs are being added to the garden programs.

After refreshments were served by June Circle members, the meeting continued.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Pat Eftink, treasurer, distributed copies of the May report and the year ended May 31.

Commission reports: Zerr, spirituality: The food pantry garage sale was a great success. Over 50 people volunteered to work with the sale.

Zerr was thanked for her many hours working with the CCW and many other ministries in the parish.

No bereavement dinners were served.

The next meeting will be held 7 p.m. July 18 in the Huels Room.

Oak Ridge FCE

Melva Floyd was hostess for the Oak Ridge meeting June 18 with 16 members present. Nelda Crader, president, opened the meeting.

Barbara Barks, secretary, read the minutes from May and Pat Hecht gave the treasurer's reports. Both were approved.

Crader discussed the FCE scholarship with only a few nominees turned in.

Devotion was given by BeBe Jenkins on honoring the United States flag from Hearth Fire Series #11. Mariesa Lesch recited a poem "In Flanders Field" by John McCrae.

Barks asked for the roll call on my favorite way to relax, many interesting ways were given.

Crader gave a report on the quarterly council meeting held June 6 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. Crader related to all that the MAFCE annual meeting would be held Sept. 18 through 20 in Jefferson City, Mo., and more information would be available in the July state FCE newsletter.

Project of the month for June was to send another check to the Jackson Food Bank. Anyone may take food items to Jackson First Baptist Church location on the lower level in back.

New business: the bake sale and garage sale will be Oct. 3 and 4 in the lower level at the Jackson Elks building. This sale is for the purpose of buying clothing for children and will be given in December along with the Jackson Elks food baskets.

Coins for Friendship and the flower fund were collected. Betty Dellinger gave treasurer Pat Hecht part of the flower fund to be put back into the club's treasury for general use.

Crader gave a program on "Home and Community Environment," which she showed a recent book on how FCE clubs in Cape Girardeau County did different projects and the book was sent to the Missouri state FCE for judging.

Barks gave a report on the autism project the FCE county worked on June 10. Several members from the five FCE clubs were represented along with several guests helping make 18 blankets, eight lap pads and eight shoulder snakes, which were taken to the Touch Point Autism Center in Cape Girardeau.

Marilyn Retherford received notification that Oak Ridge FCE Club was second in the nation who sent Christmas Cards for Friends of Our Troops.

The Missouri Veterans Home bingo was held June 24.

The July 16 meeting will be held in the lower level of Jackson Elks Lodge.
