Dortha's Day Camp for Clover Kids was held at the Cape County Park on June 6. This years theme for Camp was "Pirates of Cape County Park North." The camp began with the opening ceremony's of pledges, and songs.
Campers made parrots and treasure chests for crafts. For gardening, they got to plant money tree plants and did a pirate word search game.
Campers also got to search for a treasure chest full of goodies by figuring out clues that led to it.
The campers played "walk the plank," a piraty version of Tug of War.
After the campers finished with their events, everyone gathered together for the closing ceremonies. This included the planting of the tree that gets donated to Cape County Park from Sunny Hill Gardens, in honor of Dortha's Day Camp for Clover Kids.
Dortha's Day Camp for Clover Kids was organized 12 years ago by the Young Americans 4-H Club, with Dortha Strack leader. All the club members and families participate in some way or other to help make this camp a success every year, rain or shine. This Day Camp was originated so that the Clover Kids, could experience a little bit of what 4-H camp will be like when they get older.
The Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club met June 12 at Delmonico's in Jackson.
Installation of the 2010-2011 officers were held: Luella Armstong, president; Doris Hurst, vice president; Norma Yost, secretary; and Mary Mouser; treasurer. Roses is the theme for the coming year and each officer was given a red rose.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on July 12 at Delmonico's in Jackson with Hurst and Yost serving as co-hostesses. Please bring a small gift for the bingo game.
The Oak Ridge FCE Homemakers Club members met June 15 at Jackson Elks Lodge meeting room for its regular meeting. Eleven members were present. The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was received.
The group decided to meet again for their next meeting in the Elks Room and to have speakers from the organization the "Artful Givers" who work with orphans in Uganda.
Club members joined in singing "God Bless America." Jean Rehak gave the devotion, "Old Glory" honoring the flag.
Mary Dee Ford led an alphabet game and awarded Marilyn Retherford with a prize.
Old business included remembering members and their family members who are ill.
Barb Barks reported that after two work days where the county clubs participated with a county project, 13 autism blankets had been completed as were seven neck items. The work on this project will resume in October of this year.
Nelda Crader reported on the recent Cape Girardeau County Council meeting that she and Rehak had attended.
Lee Anderson and Betty Dellinger shared that they had purchased groceries for the family of a gentleman who has Leukemia. This was a club project for the month.
Barks was announced to be one of the District Scholarship winners for registration at the state conference in September.
Retherford, Crader and Rehak were first place winners with their prepared state reports. They will also be recognized at state conference.
August will be the club's international meeting. A meal featuring Nigerian foods will be prepared by members, and a program on Nigeria will be given.
Mariesa Lesch gave the program on barbecue. She stressed safety being needed when we use the grill.
Coins were collected for the friendship project as usual, and members will assist veterans playing Bingo later this month.
