Town & Country FCE
Town and Country FCE Club held its annual family picnic on July 10 at Cape Girardeau County Park South. Shirley Heise invited the most family members with 13.
Linda Thompson presided over a business meeting where it was decided to donate two fans to the Salvation Army.
Mary Klaproth announced she had received a response from Fan Mail for the Troops in which the club participated at Christmastime. She received a letter from a soldier stationed outside Baghdad. Klaproth will attend the National FCE meeting in Albuquerque, N.M., July 25 through 27. She will receive the Missouri Heart of FCE Award. Several members, including Darlene McCain, who received the scholarship from the Southeast District, will attend the State FCE Meeting in Columbia, Mo., Sept. 4 and 5. Members discussed topics for the SEMO District Fair booth with plans to be finalized at the August meeting.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. July 31 at Pizza Inn in Cape Girardeau.
The next meeting will be on Aug. 14 at the home of Sue Jones. Norma Schrieber will present the program, "How's your Balance?"
American Legion Post 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 of Jackson met June 10 with Commander Byron Fluegge opening the meeting.
The election committee passed out ballots for the election of next year's officers. Jerry Barks and James McClain were introduced as new members. The minutes for the May meeting were approved.
Richard Aguilar gave the financial report. It was accepted. He also read a letter from the Community Counseling Center.
P.M. Kurre reported membership is at 584.
Lou Crites thanked everyone who helped with the flags on Memorial Day.
Harlan Siebert reported getting the sign outside fixed. He also reported the executive committee discussion about putting in steps from the basement to the hall. Approval will have to be received from the city. The plan is to put steps along the building's south wall. Also, there are plans to get new carpet for the north entrance. Siebert also reported that there are beds in the basement that need to be taken out. Bill Poe said he was given premission about two years ago to get rid of them. Trustees will take care of this.
Poe thanks people for mailing Homecomers tickets back in. He reported equipment well used and gave the club report. It was accepted.
Jim Nelson reported on contributions to the post Memorial Scholarship fund: John C. Crites and Sally and Pam Finch, in memory of Dr. Joe Jeager; American Legion Auxiliary 158 in memory of Emilee Knott Seabaugh; Post 158, in memory of deceased 2002 veteran members; Mrs. Marjorie Grindstaff, Brad, Brenda, and families, in memory of Paul Meyr; Norman Short, in memory of brothers Paul and Grubb Short, and brother-in-law, Albert Bertling; and Glenn and Vesta Bollinger, in memory of Paul Meyr.
Leon Laurentious reported flag information and gave the house report. He also informed members that Joe Smith is recovering from a heart attack.
Charles Hutson reported on Americanism and thanked everyone for their support for Memorial Day. He reported this year's $500 American Legion scholarship winners were Matthew Neel and Lee Strickert.
Ken Koehler announced that Jackson will host the State Legion baseball playoffs here July 26 and 27.
Vince Schwartz was asked to take the hospitality room at the convention. He requested $200 for this purpose. Motion was made, seconded and approved.
Jack Latimer moved that the post provide $2,200 for a new TV for the clubroom. The motion was seconded and passed. He also reported $400 was given to parents of a sailor brought back from Iraq so they could visit him in the hospital in San Diego.
The election committee reported the results of the election: Virgil Whitener, commander; Kurre, first vice commander; Gary Kamp, second vice commander; Richard Decker, adjutant; Aguilar, finance officer; James Nelson, historian; Poe, service officer; Koehler, chaplain; Harry Trust, sergeant at arms; and Keith Seabaugh and Crites, trustees.
Lamplighters FCE
The Lamplighters FCE Club enjoyed a picnic at Jackson City Park on June 19 to celebrate each member's birthday. Gifts were exchanged by secret pals. The club's "adopted" family joined as guests and gifts were given for the children's birthdays.
A short business meeting was held. A review of upcoming events was discussed.
A program on flag etiquette was given by Sharon Bogenpohl.
Moments of remembrance were shared for Verna Dell Petzoldt, a member who recently passed away.
Kage FCE Club
Jobyne Daume was hostess when Kage FCE Club met on July 10 at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Shirley Palen led the group in singing.
Reports on a recent blood drive sponsored by FCE Clubs of Cape Girardeau County were given. Members brought food items for FISH. The club voted to contribute $25 to Relay for Life in memory of Verna Dell Petzoldt of the Lamplighters Club. Members will bake cookies and cupcakes for a rodeo at Flickerwood Arena on July 19. This will be done in support of The Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. Some members plan to attend the state conference in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 3 through 5.
The program was a book review given by Verna Vogel. The book was "All I Know About Animal Behavior I Learned in Loehmann's Dressing Room," by Erma Bombeck.
The next meeting will be Aug. 14 at the home of Judie Herbst. Dues for 2004 are to be paid, officers will be elected, penny socks will be turned in and there will be 4-H demonstrations.
