Vincentian Marian Youth

More than 100 teenagers and their chaperons from Illinois and Missouri traveled to Little Rock, Ark., the first week of June for the annual Operation Overhaul Mission Trip.

Preparations were made several months before their trip to the Little Rock area.

Staying at the Saint Joseph Orphanage, built in 1908, the group served the community in a variety of ways. While some put a new roof on a home, others were busy cleaning the inside. Another group revitalized a large playground that is open to serve the underprivileged in the same neighborhood. One family received a kitchen and bathroom that had never been completed. Another group created a green house for the St. Joseph's Home, while others repainted windows and attended to the grounds which were in need of attention. The St. Augustine team renovated the parish rectory in anticipation of the arrival of two new seminarians. The St. Anne's team dug ditches, installed drainpipes, painted and cleared brush.

All of the individual teams came back together and the end of each day to share Mass, food and fellowship time with one another. They had time to reflect and share their experiences with the other teams.

One of the fun things scheduled during the week was a fiesta hosted by the Hispanic community of St. Anne's Parish. Another meal was shared with the homeless who came to share their plight. A walk with them to where they live outside of the shelters, opened the eyes of what it truly means to struggle while living on the streets.

Cape Girardeau FCE Council

Cape County FCE Council meeting was held on June 2.

Inez Statler, president, opened meeting.

The devotion, "Footprints in the Sand of Time," was given by Dortha Strack, member of Kage FCE Club.

There were 10 members in attendance. Mary Kloproth, secretary, read minutes. The treasurer's report was given.

Strack gave a report on the FCE spring district meeting held April 26 in Sedgewickville, Mo.

Klaproth reported on the Child Advocacy Day in Jefferson City, Mo., on March 31 where there were 163 representatives and 34 senators for a total of 197, in addition the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, attorney general and state auditor in attendance. Dolls were put on tables in the rotunda of the capitol building and later given out.

Report on autism weighted blanket was given by Linda Sebaugh. Cape Girardeau County made 106 blankets, 71 lap pads and 20 shoulder snakes. A discussion will be held at the September meeting if this project will be continued for the following year or do another county project.

A discussion on the 2012 Achievement Form was held and voted on to turn in a club picture and list projects and do away with the Club of the Year Award.

The council discussed the trifold on autism weighted blanket project for the state meeting on Sept. 28 through 30 at Springfield, Mo. It is 75-year diamond jubilee for the FCE clubs.

Darlene McCain, Town & Country member, received the National Board Alumni Scholarship for the Denver national FCE meeting on July 15 through 17. This is given out to first-time attendees.

The following are things that clubs did for the National day of the family:

Kage FCE Club gave 19 Books for newborns were taken to Saint Francis Medical Center and 61 books to Cape Girardeau County Health Department; Lamplighters FCE Club gave books for newborns to Saint Francis Medical Center and Southeast Health; Town & Country FCE Club gave 100 books to newborns to Southeast Health; Oak Ridge gave newborn books in the community.

Strack reported she sent out eight get-well and thank-you cards.

Klaproth reported on upcoming tours: The Muny in St. Louis to see "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" on Aug. 1. The cost is $82 with dinner at Zia's.

A St. Louis Cardinal ballgame against the New York Mets on Sept. 22. The cost is $65. The deadline is Sept. 5.

Inez Statler received the Heart of FCE Award that will be given out at the state conference in Springfield. Also awards will be given out for the reports that were sent in by club members about the things that was done for the year.

The next FCE Council meeting will be Sept. 1.

Kage FCE

Jobyna Daume was hostess when the Kage FCE met at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center for their regular monthly meeting. The devotional, "This is the Day," was presented by the hostess. President Dortha Strack presided.

Dortha's tip of the day was "keep a set of measuring cups in sugar and flour canisters."

A collection was taken among members for the Margaret Crites Memorial Fund which will be sent to the FCE Foundation. She was a former member of Kage FCE.

Several members reported that they had worked on the County FCE Project, weighted blankets for autism.

Members were reminded of the Military Mail Project. The deadline is Oct. 21, and members are to use no envelopes to keep the cost of postage lower.

Inez Statler reported on the county council meeting.

The club service project for June was Dortha's Clover Kids Camp.

Linda Farrow will be hostess for the next meeting Thursday.

Before the meeting the following 4-H Members presented demonstrations: Josh Walters, Fruitland Club; Anthony Strack, Young American Club; Belinda Strack, Young American Club; Trish Kirchdoerfer, Young American Club; and Tyler Kirchdoerfer, Young American Club.

VFW Post 10495 Auxiliary

The Auxiliary to Jackson Memorial VFW Post 10495 installed officers at a joint dinner at the post. They are Teresa Payne, president; Darlene Fluegge, senior vice president; Fern Shultz, junior vice president; Vera Jean Voges, conductress; Gladys Siebert, chaplain; Bernice Haynes, secretary; Becky Klob, treasurer; Coletta Garland, guard; Barbara Slinkard, patriotic instructor; Lucille Frederick, flag bearer; and Pauline Nitsch, musician. The officers began their duties on July 1.
