Alpha Mu Master

Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the Royal N'Orleans restaurant for its final meeting of the chapter year. The new year begins in September. New president Linda Metheny conducted the meeting.

A thank-you note was received from Safe House for Women for a recent contribution.

Judie Herbst presented Marsha Parrish, past president, with a gift certificate and the president's gavel for her pin.

Chapter assignments and hostess dates were reviewed for next year and summer event dates and places were discussed. Summer events are: Lunch out at O'Charley's on Tuesday; couch potato party at the home of Bernie Gardner on July 11; lunch out at Great Wall Chinese Buffet on Aug. 10; and barn party at "Charlie's Barn" on Aug. 22.

Program of the year awards were presented to Joyce Hays and Marilyn Schwab. Perfect-attendance awards were presented to Mary Schwab, Vicki McKinney, Schwab, Herbst, Gardner, Metheny and Parrish.

It was announced that Beginning Day will be held Aug. 30 at Francine's Gardens.

Secret pals were revealed, and new secret pal names were drawn for the coming year.

The next regular meeting will be on Sept. 20 at the home of Gwen Nussbaum.

Young Americans 4-H

The Young Americans 4-H Club met May 20 at Grace United Methodist Church. Tori Schweer, vice president, called the meeting to order. There were 19 members, 12 leaders and two guests present.

Scott Givens, from Southeast Missouri Hospital, presented a program on health and fitness. After the program, Gary Schweer and Truman Kinsey led the group in the pledges and Kinsey led the group in a song. Those with May birthdays were recognized.

The minutes were read by Julia Weber and the treasurer's report was given by Michael Weber. In response to participation in "Mail for the military," Clint Heuer and B.J. Heuer received a letter from a soldier stationed in Hawaii.

Reports on crafts and rabbit project meetings were given. Greg Illers gave handouts to members outlining their assignments and responsibilities for the upcoming "Dortha's Day Camp for Clover Kids," which was held Sunday at Cape County Park.

Gary Schweer gave a demonstration on rabbit nutrition, and Joseph Yuede demonstrated how to make a perfect glass of tea. A game was led by Gary Schweer, and the Kinsey family served refreshments.

Hobbs Chapel UMW

The Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Women met Wednesday. June Warder presented an inspiring program and served refreshments.

Rosemary Whittard has been placed in charge of the heifer program. A pipe has been placed in the foyer of the church to receive donations.

The UMW kicked off the program by donating $250 to purchase a water buffalo. Pastor Janet and Chris Simmons will present that donation at the annual conference in Columbia, Mo.

Hobbs Chapel UMW will host the citywide UMW meeting on Oct. 5. This date represents the 135th anniversary of the United Methodist Church in missions.

Lamplighters FCE

The Lamplighters FCE Club met in the home of Roberta Seabaugh on May 20 with 10 members present. The hostess gave a devotional "Shut the Door" based on 2 Kings 4:1-7.

Beverly Meyer made yellow ribbons for members to attach to their mailboxes to honor her son, Russ, who is currently serving in the Marines in Iraq.

Verla Mangels and Linda Sebaugh reported on the FCE District Meeting in Doniphan. The club will furnish three dozen homemade cookies for the FCE-sponsored Red Cross Blood Drive on July 1.

It was decided to furnish a family pass to the Jackson swimming pool and a gift certificate to Dairy Queen to our adopted family. A donation will be made to the Cape Girardeau Baptist Association for the disaster relief program to thank Ron Hahs for work he has done for the club.

Karen McLane gave a program, "Women and clinical depression," and Dorothy Hahs gave a program, "Managing insurance costs."

Sebaugh received honorable mention for the report she did for Missouri FCE Association.

The next meeting will be in the Jackson city park on June 17.

High-Noon Toastmasters

The High-Noon Toastmasters Club met June 1 and elected officers for the coming year. They are Bill Meyer, president; Joan Masters, vice president; Gene Loftis, vice president of public relations and membership; and Russ Kullberg, secretary and treasurer.

The speakers for the day were Kullberg, who spoke on the subject, "To the Moon and Back." The second speaker was Joyanne Bates who gave her first speech, which is called her icebreaker.

Toastmasters meet at 12:10 p.m. every Tuesday at the Church of Christ annex, 328 West End Blvd. in Cape Girardeau. For more information about the club, call 334-3130.

Cape Girardeau County FCE

The Cape Girardeau County FCE Council met in the University Extension Center for its Thursday meeting. Nelda Crader presided with Mary Gosche, human development specialist, in attendance.

Shirley Cracraft reported 40 people attended the Leaders Training held earlier in the year. Members attending the spring district meeting in Doniphan reported an enjoyable and educational event where Betty Shalk, state president, and Lynn Maples, state treasurer, were on the program.

Mary Klaproth spoke briefly on tours that the FCE clubs of the county have sponsored and the tours forthcoming: Muny Opera, July 27; Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Ark., Oct. 15 to 17; Branson, Nov. 12 to 14; Lady of the Snows, Dec. 11.

Four clubs from the county will participate in educational booths for the SEMO District Fair.

Crader and vice president Barbara Schaffner will represent Cape County Council at the state conference in Columbia Aug. 25 to 27.

Representatives from the county clubs will also be in attendance.

New business included announcement of county member Shirley Heise (Town and Country Club) having won a scholarship for registration fees with Martha Slaten (Kage Club) alternate to the state conference meeting.

Final preparations were made for the Red Cross Blood Drive on July 1 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Red Cross Facility at 20 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau.

A discussion was held on the Military Mail project of the various clubs. Goshe brought news of the need for assisting families left at home who are in need of our support.

Gosche also is soliciting clubs for pictures that will identify successful projects each club has experienced during the last year.

These pictures will be used to prepare a trifold to be displayed at the state conference in August.

The fall district meeting was announced to be held in Wayne County.

On Aug. 16, the Perry County Extension Office will be the site of a program planning meeting for all club vice presidents.

Gerald Jones, presiding commissioner of Cape Girardeau County, signed a proclamation for the Town and Country Club declaring May 15 as National Day of the Family for Cape Girardeau County. The Kage Club had their proclamation signed by the mayor of Cape Girardeau, Jay Knudtson. Both clubs provided Golden Books for newborns at St. Francis Medical Center and Southeast Missouri Hospital on the appointed dates.
