American Legion Post 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met June 8. Jack Latimer made a motion that the following officers be elected by acclamation: Gary Kamp, commander; P.M. Kurre, first vice commander; Larry Koehler, second vice commander; Richard Decker, adjutant; Richard Aguilar, finance officer; James Nelson, historian; John W. Poe, service officer; and Bill Sullivan, sergeant at arms. The motion was passed and seconded. Ballots for trustee and chaplain were distributed. Nominated for chaplain were Charles Shultz and Tim Johnston. Nominated for trustee were Byron Fluegge, Robert Hartle and Harry Trust. Fluegge and Hartle are the new trustees, and Shultz is the chaplain.
Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes as written. Aguilar gave the financial report, and the motion to accept was seconded and passed.
Kurre reported a membership of 583. Bill Poe was recognized for recruiting 165 members and for having 50 years of over 100 members signed up.
Lou Crites reported 904 flags were placed on graves for Memorial Day, and he thanked everyone who helped with this project.
Harlan Siebert reported for the trustees stating the architect had paid a visit to the hall for the steps project. Siebert said the project will take some time to complete. He also reported that the ladies wanted a larger TV for the dining room and he had bought one for $75.
Bill Poe reported that Verna Nitsch and Carol Loennecke had donated hospital equipment to the post, and he gave the club report.
Leon Laurentius gave the honor guard report. No funerals were held, but the guard posted the colors on Memorial Day. Requests for the honor guard were at the Lutheran Home on June 14; and Sunday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church and at Hanover Lutheran Church at a time to be announced.
Laurentius announced that the new captain of the guard will be Bob Hartle.
Jim Nelson reported contributions to the American Legion Post 158 Memorial Scholarship fund from: Betty Goza, Virginia Sides, Carol Scholl, Carolyn Myer, Beulah Beussink, Carleen Kasten, Inez Knott, Wanda Abbott, Betty Bishop, Ethel Wiseman and Lois Mouser in memory of Ina Nothdurft.
Nelson also reported $500 scholarships were awarded to Jacob Adams, Brock Howard, Jill Sneathen and Katie Vangilder at the 2004 Jackson High School graduation.
Ken Koehler made a motion for the second vote to support the ball teams with $3,000. Motion was seconded and passed. He also reported on the success of the tournament. Jackson won third, and the tournament made $1,600 on the gate.
Leonard Adams reported four dances were held and turned in $1,400 from these dances.
It was announced that the executive committee had voted to have two plaques placed in the hall for the municipal band and all the high school bands that have participated with the legion in the past. Also, the committee approved donating to the scholarship fund $999 in honor of the bands' participation. A motion was made, seconded and passed.
St. Mary CCW
St. Mary Cathedral Council of Catholic Women met June 17 in the Monsignor Huels Room. Nancy King, president, opened the meeting with prayer. She thanked all who helped with the parish picnic.
Lawana Wulfers, Church Women United representative, announced that the date of the CROP sale and bake sale has been changed to July 16 at Centenary United Methodist Church Family Life Center.
Items for school kits will be collected this summer, and two food boxes will be prepared.
Following a tour of the Red House, the group planned programs for the coming year.
The next meeting will be July 15 in the Monsignor Huels Room.
Cape County AARP 4041
The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of AARP 4041 met June 7 at Capetown Assisted Living for lunch and a tour of the facility. There were 31 members and four visitors present.
During the month of May, AARP members volunteered at the Day of Service at the Missouri Veterans Home, the Red Cross blood drive, the Senior Information Day, the Medicine Rx Information Day and the District 9 Round Table in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Roberts Homemakers
The members of the Roberts Homemakers Club met at Riverside Regional Library in Jackson for the June meeting following lunch at Pizza Hut. Alice Eisenhower was the hostess.
Gloria Hanners led the Pledge of Allegiance and the club collect. Flossie Dow gave the programs "Bird Tales" and "Life Lessons from a Garden."
