Sons of American Revolution
The Sons of the American Revolution met May 17 at Dexter Bar-B-Q in Cape Girardeau.
Wendel Miller and Walter Schroeder have been presenting high school awards in the area. The SAR Color Guard was present at the local VFW groundbreaking in Cape Girardeau. A donation of $3,000 was received from Painters Local 1292 in Cape Girardeau. The money will go toward the purchase of 27 flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol from the flags' inception. They will be displayed with their history in appropriate places for the education of the public.
Guest speaker Herb Nance delivered a patriotic and informative talk about our country's flag. He presented a large framed picture to the chapter depicting a window in the history of our flag and country.
The Daughters of the American Revolution will host a luncheon at 11 a.m. on June 16 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. The purpose of the luncheon is to organize the Byrd Settlement Society of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution.
Anyone interested in tracing their ancestors back to the Revolutionary War to become members of SAR can contact Leon Lefler at 335-6778.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 21 at the Red House in Cape Girardeau.
American Legion Auxiliary
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary met for lunch on May 12. Hostesses were Myrna Powers and Iola Amelunke.
The meeting was called to order by Amelunke, president. Correspondence included three thank-you notes from Gold Star Mother Jean Hogan and two women veterans, Eleonora Brewton and Marilyn Ritter. Sympathy cards were received from the Hal Scowden family and Muriel Day. A letter seeking volunteers and donations for the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship was read. Two letters came from 14th District president Vicki Wilson congratulating the unit for meeting its membership goal and asked units to send bus fare to district girls state, Leveta Hodge.
The Salvation Army sent a thank-you letter or items donated to its food pantry. Frieda Howard made a motion to send money to Children's Miracle Network. It was seconded by Dorothy Klein and the motion was approved.
The National World War II Memorial was dedicated on Saturday in Washington, D.C. Post 63 held an open house on Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. with a World War II display.
On Wednesday, members will tour Old St. Vincent's Church, Old McKendree Chapel, Zion United Methodist Church and Evangelical Church in Tilsit. Lunch will be served to the group. The group will meet at the American Legion Hall at 9:30 a.m. to carpool.
Members were asked by Patsy Kimbrel to bring items needed for the kitchen.
Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met on May 11 at the home of Ruby Bock. The meeting was called to order by Elsie Gerecke, president.
Visitor LaDonna Beggs gave a reading. JoAnn Leadbetter gave the program and stated how a visit to the sick in hospitals with different symbols would cheer the patient. She has done this for some time.
The group will meet June 8 at the home of Alma Bodenstein. The program will be on 4-H.
