American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63

Twenty two members and three guests attended the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 meeting on June 8 at the home of Barbara Yallaly. Fried chicken was provided and members brought covered dishes to complete the meal.

The 50/50 drawing was awarded to Mildred Varvell.

The females residing at the Missouri Veterans Home were remembered with gifts on Memorial Day in appreciation for their service to our country.

The auxiliary recently presented a new American Flag to the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.

The annual 4th of July picnic will be held in Arena Park, beginning at noon at the first two shelters north of the Arena Building. Members are asked to bring a covered dish.

The afternoon was spent playing bingo and winners received patriotic theme prizes.

Town and Country FCE Club

Town and Country FCE Club celebrated its 45th anniversary June 9, at a dinner meeting held at Pagoda Gardens Chinese Restaurant in Cape Girardeau. Sue Jones and Linda Thompson were in charge of arrangements. Darlene McCain, president, presided over the business meeting. Coins for Friendship were collected and roll call was answered by stating the year each member joined the club.

Thank-you notes were received from Parkview State School for the recent "end of year school party" given by the club and the Young American's 4-H Club for the monetary gift given to Clover Kids Camp. Jones reported the club's purchase of two fans to be given to the Salvation Army will be delivered June 10th.

Jones, McCain and Klaproth reported on attending the FCE Council meeting held June 2. The decision was made to use the All Clubs Achievement Score Card Section II for emphasis on activities of each club along with group picture of the club members. The Club of Year award will be eliminated. This action will be on a trial basis to see how this works for clubs to continue their level of participation.

McCain received the National Board Alumni Scholarship to attend National FCE Diamond Jubilee Conference in Denver, Colo., July 14 through July 17. Jones and Klaproth will also attend the conference.

Club booth plans were discussed for placement at the SEMO District Fair in September.

The next meeting will be family picnic at 6:30 p.m. on July 7 at Pizza Inn in Fruitland. Members are to bring items for the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry and bingo prizes for The Lutheran Home. Also, the club will purchase word search books for prizes.

Club out will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Stooges in Jackson. Secret pal gift exchange honoring members anniversaries concluded the meeting and Klaproth received the hostess gift.

The board members of the Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association met June 6 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. Five board members, Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot, Melody Hagans, Mary Talbut, and Larry Simon, and one guest, Richard Proffer, were present.

Hagans gave the treasurer's report. The amounts in the chapter's regular account and scholarship account are unchanged from last month.

Simon reported on the May 12 Diversity Project where we treated members of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Family Resource Center to a showing of "Alvin and the Chipmunks" at the Cape 14 Cine. Simon sent the required follow-up report to the MAA so the chapter can obtain the Diversity Grant. The chapter received a check from Wehrenberg Theatres for its share of the profits from the movie.

The June 16 student picnic was discussed and the picnic checklist was reviewed, which lists the responsible person for each picnic item and activity. Simon will follow up concerning the beer, water, and soda. Hagans will follow up regarding the Tiger Stripe Ice Cream. Frasher will contact scholarship applicants and send an email reminder to members.

The chapter needs to obtain three new members before July 1 in order to meet Columns/Capstone requirements. It was agreed that the chapter would purchase memberships if necessary to meet the requirement. Frasher will check with Stephanie Heffernan if it is permissible to purchase student memberships to meet the requirement. If so, at least three student memberships will be awarded to students attending the picnic.

An open discussion was held regarding future events, such as wine tastings, watch parties, trips to football games, etc. Input is needed from members regarding what they would prefer and Talbut suggested that Survey Monkey be used as a tool to obtain this information from members. Talbut agreed to set up Survey Monkey for Frasher, who will develop the questions and then have Heffernan send the survey to all of our members.

The plan for the July meeting was discussed. Frasher suggested that a different type of meeting be held and have State Representative Donna Lichtenegger be the special guest speaker. The meeting would be on a day other than the first Monday and would be held in the downstairs meeting room of the Extension Center according to the availability of Lichtenegger and the room. It will be advertised in the media and open to more than just chapter members.

Having other guest speakers in the future was discussed and the chapter will seek Column's credit for having special guest speakers at meetings or other events.

Kage FCE

Judie Herbst was hostess for members of the Kage FCE Club when they met at the Herbst Family Barn for a luncheon and their monthly meeting. President Dortha Strack presided. The "tip of the day", the "M ? N ? O", was taken from the "Show Me Book of Missouri".

Several members reported that they had attended the workshop to help with the weighted blankets for autism being made as a county project.

Books for newborns were taken to Saint Francis Medical Center.

The state conference will be held Sept. 23 and 24 in St. Louis. The theme for the conference will be "Tune up your life with FCE."

Sharon Aldridge and Strack gave a report on the District Meeting that they attended on May 6 in Doniphan, Mo.

The program on Nigeria was presented by Barbara Marshall.
