PAC of Southeast Missouri Autism Project
The Parent Advisory Committee of the Southeast Missouri Autism Project met May 26 at the Sikeston Regional Center. There was a discussion on hiring to fill open positions. There was also a discussion on the need for a summer conference, and a tentative date for the first of August was discussed. This conference will be for parents as well as professionals. There will be guest speakers and material presented by the Judevine Center for Autism in St. Louis, Mo. Interested parents and professionals need to contact their technician or the office for further information.
The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on June 23 at the Sikeston Regional Center. This meeting is open to all interested parents of autistic children being served by the Autism Project.
New Salem UMW
The New Salem United Methodist Women of Daisy met in the church fellowship hall for the regular meeting on June 2. Also, a pizza party was held for all birthdays during the year.
The meeting was called to order by Jackie Kurre, president. Twenty shut-in visits were made during the month. A card was read from a former member.
Two griddles and two spatulas will be purchased for the church kitchen. Plans were completed for the father-son banquet, which will be held Friday in the fellowship hall.
Collene Lukefahr will donate some things for the kitchen.
At the next meeting, everyone is to wear something red, white and blue.
American Legion Auxiliary
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary met June 9 for the regular meeting. Nineteen women met at the legion building and carpooled to Old St. Vincent's Church for a tour conducted by Tony Dohogne. The group then traveled to Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville where Ruby Deneke met them, told a bit of history of the church and played the organ. The group then traveled to St. James United Church of Christ in Tilsit, where they ate lunch and toured the church and cemetery.
Myrna Powers, Iola Amelunke and Barbara Yallaly will attend the American Legion Convention in July. The men of American Legion Post 63 held a flag disposal ceremony for Flag Day on Monday.
Everyone was reminded of the annual Post Fourth of July picnic at noon. The two shelters north of the Arena Building have been reserved.
The next meeting will be at the legion hall on July 14 with lunch at noon and the meeting beginning at 1 p.m.
Kage FCE Club
4-H demonstrations were the main focus of attention when the Kage FCE Club met on May 10 at Cape Girardeau Senior Center. Julia Weber, dressed as a clown, demonstrated making a balloon dog. Hunter Rubel used pictures to help in describing the five top breeds of beef cattle, and Michael Weber demonstrated making peanut butter pie.
In the business portion of the meeting, it was reported that 27 campers and 27 adults attended the recent "Dortha's Day Camp" for beginners in 4-H.
Barbara Marshall read from answers received in response to her Christmas greetings to the military. Edna Hey reported about changes in mailing to the military this year. In July, club members are to bring items to be sent to Jake Burgfeld who is stationed in Iraq. He is the grandson of member Neva Jackson. Applications for grants were given to some of the members to seek funding for projects.
Dortha Strack, president, announced that 4-H Hay Day Fun Show will be held Saturday at the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship arena.
Schaffner was hostess, and hostess gifts were presented to Inez Statler, Barbara Marshall and Jackson.
The next meeting will be held July 8 at the home of Statler.
New McKendree UMW
The Hope Circle of New McKendree United Methodist Women welcomed members with a snack food buffet prior to the June 1 meeting.
The Esther Circle was in charge of the program and co-chairman Janet Piepenbrok introduced the guest speaker, Beverly Banks, who told of her experience growing up in St. Louis in an Orthodox Jewish family. Her introduction to Christianity did not come until adulthood when she converted to Christianity and is an active participant in the Jews for Jesus movement.
Barbara Burnette, president, conducted the business meeting. Reports of the circles showed that Hope Circle had the most members present. Upcoming events were announced. They are: the Annual Day Apart at Lake Wappapello on Saturday; the Church Women United Crop Sale at Centenary United Meth-odist Church in Cape Girardeau on July 19; and the School of Christian Mission at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., on July 29 and Aug. 1.
Barbara Hartle, membership chairman, reported some women have indicated they are interested in becoming UMW members.
The mission emphasis this year for the Festival of Sharing will be school kits and members are encouraged to bring items to fill the bags.
Big Brother Big Sister Optimist
The Big Brother Big Sister Optimist Club cleaned the Family Resource Center on South Sprigg Street for a service project on May 22.
Monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at Mount Auburn Christian Church at 6:30 p.m.
Exchange Club
The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau held the annual club picnic at Cape County Park on June 1. The club is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The club received its charter in June 1954.
Max Yager, president elect of Lincoln Land District, was present for the ceremony and presented plaques to two charter members, Clarence Lohmann and John Eggimann, for 50 years of membership.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary
The VFW Post 3838 Ladies Auxiliary met Thursday with Debbie Griffin presiding. Communications and official reports were read. There were five new members installed, and committee reports were read.
Delegates were given their credentials for state convention, which will be in Columbia, Mo., June 24 through 27.
A donation was made to Mid-America Teen Challenge, and a pledge of $5,000 was made for the new VFW Post 3838 building fund.
Members were asked to help at the Veterans Home Father's Day barbecue and bingo to be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Bingo will be held at the Veterans Home on June 26 and volunteers are needed.
The next steak night will be Aug. 7. The ladies were asked to help or bring a dessert.
The next meeting of the ladies' auxiliary will be at 7 p.m. July 14 at the post.
