New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met June 1 in the church fellowship hall. The meeting was opened by Mary Klaproth, president, leading the members in the reciting the UMW Purpose.

Gale King, secretary, read the minutes from the May meeting and they were approved. The treasurer's report was given by Marilyn Fronabarger and was approved.

Jolie McCallister, chairperson of the Hope circle, introduced Merideth Pobst. Pobst gave a talk on the work of the Junior Achievement program of Southeast Missouri. The counties served by Junior Achievement include: Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Scott and Wayne. The programs focus on teaching skills needed for work force readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial responsibility. All programs are provided at no cost to any school.

Klaproth read an e-mail from Donna Brown about her mother, Pat Holloway's illness.

Klaproth announced that the Mini School of Missions will be held in Portageville, Mo., on Aug 21. Registration must be turned by Aug. 14. Mary also announced that the Annual UMW meeting will be in Jefferson City, Mo., on Sept. 25.

Wilma Wilcoxson gave a report on the bereavement meal served for the family of Mary Kasten. Wilcoxson moved that the unit pay the expenses of the meal. Jones seconded. The motion carried. Wilcoxson thanked those who helped prepare the meal and those who baked cakes. Margie Crites, Betty Henry, Elwanda Corbin, Millie Rose and Jones helped prepare the meal. Kay McCauley, Tandy Wendel, Mary Smith and Patsy Johnson baked cakes.

June Engel reported on the kitchen equipment purchased with money from the Hope Circle.

The Mary and Martha Circle won the attendance ribbon with 11 members present.

The Ruth Circle and Members at Large served the Jackson Manor birthday party. Mary and Martha Circle will serve in July.

Corbin read a report from Julie Combs on the Memorial Day Weekend Yard Sale. Combs thanked the many people who made the sale a success. She reported that items left over were given to various organizations: two boxes of winter clothes went to the Jackson School District, Beanie Babies to Network Against Sexual Violence, some material to Family Community Education to be used for blankets for children with autism, and the rest to the Millersville Fire Department for their sale to purchase new equipment.

The president announced that the Festival of Sharing will be in Dexter, Mo., on Sept. 25. The school kits and health kits for that meeting should be turned in by Sept. 21.

The next meeting will be a salad luncheon at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7 with the Mission Team in charge. The program will be given by the Ruth Circle.
