American Legion Auxiliary 63
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 met with Frieda Howard, Gladys Lawrence and Vergie Templeton as hostesses.
Betty Cato, president, called the meeting to order with 19 members in attendance.
Myrna Powers attended the dedication of two Habitat for Humanity houses and presented each of the new homeowners with a gift basket.
Members were reminded of Poppy Day on Friday and the district meeting in Jackson to be held at 2 p.m. May 21.
The Cape Girardeau County FCE met March 27 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson for the annual All Clubs Day.
JoAnn Hahs of the Lamplighters Club presented a program, "Katrina's Aftermath: From a volunteer's view." She and her husband have spent several weeks in Louisiana working in a kitchen which the Baptist Association furnishes. She presented slides of the damage done by the hurricane and told of her work there.
Each member brought a salad to share for the noon lunch.
The afternoon program was presented by Central High School students. They sang excerpts of songs from "The Pirates of Penzance."
Abby Ritter, a student at St. Mary Cathedral School, received the FCE Essay Award. She read her essay, "Fairness," to the group.
Membership pins were given in recognition of years in FCE. Those receiving pins were: Marilyn Retherford, Oak Ridge, 10 years; Opal Collins, Kage, 20 years; Nell Kieninger, Wonderworkers, 20 years; Melva Floyd, Oak Ridge, 30 years; Gayla Volz, Lamplighters, 40 years; Dorothy Hahs, Lamplighters, 40 years; Billie Criddle, Oak Ridge, 40 years; Verla Mangels, Lamplighters, 45 years; and Ruby Hitt, Oak Ridge, 55 years.
Mary Gosche showed slides of work each club had done through the past year. Many volunteer hours ensued with these activities.
Lamplighters Club was recognized as the Club of the Year for 2005. A silver tray with the name engraved on it was given to the club.
Kage Club gave door prizes to those with a lucky number.
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Ladies Guild met April in the church fellowship area. Lynne Cairns, president, presided over the meeting. JoAnn Hilpert, Dianne Meyr and Donna Magwitz gave the opening devotion.
Juanita Bremer gave the program on flower presentation.
Cairns reported on serving a meal at the Lutheran Campus Center on April 9. Members brought items for Easter baskets to be given to the Safehouse for Women.
A donation was made to the Bethesda Lutheran Home and Services. Members signed up to bring food for the Easter breakfast.
Committee reports including nursing home visits was made by Emma Backer, Ruth Degenhardt and Hilpert.
The St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met April 20 in the Monsignor Huels Room of the parish office building.
Nancy King, president, presided over the meeting. She welcomed Anna Knaup and her granddaughter from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson, and Cindy Layton and Barb Kraesheimer, April circle members who were attending for the first time.
Darlene Halton from the Chocolate Garden in Delta presented the program. She demonstrated making chocolate-dipped strawberries and using molds to make candy.
Margie Huber, organization commission chair, thanked all who donated items and worked at the spring bake sale and vendors for the community garage sale.
Hazel Blank, legislative commission chair, distributed lists of addresses and telephone numbers of state and federal legislators. She announced that CWU will observe May Friendship Day at 6 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army.
It was voted to change the term of office of president and vice president to one year.
The next meeting will be on May 18. This will be the annual May crowning of the statue of the Virgin Mary.
